Lock keepers house Chester Street

sospiri

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
I can't find a thread dedicated to locks or Chester Street, so I hope this is OK.

Has anyone got, or even seen, a picture of the old Lock House at Aston Locks for which the address appears to be Chester Street, please? I don't know the area at all, though an ancestor was lock-keeper there for many years in the 1880/1890 period. A former bargee himself, he had the unusual surname BAIZON.

My guess, and it is just a guess, is that the site is now occupied by a hotel.

Regards,

Maurice

Thanks for the maps, Mike, especially the first one which has so much nice detail.

I've just been reading an article on a BCN site which says that an open space close to the Aston Science Park is where the lock-keeper's house once stood.

Another one of the related ancestors lived in Avenue Road and was employed at a mineral water works. I notice there is an Aerated Water Works close to the area we are talking about - bonus! :)

Regards,

Maurice

Thank you very much, Mike. Now we have several sets of locks - and presumably the lock-keepers' house in there somewhere! (There were two of them with their respective large families living in the house.)

But it's 1:40am here in Crete so time to start with a fresh head in the morning! :)

Hi,
( new to the forum)
Apparently it was Lock Keepers House no 67 , it was , at the wharf in Aston. According to the 1891 census between the Toll house and ?Fodels factory. I haven't been able to find a phot so am now trying the toll house and ?Fodels to see if it appears on a photo of one of them !

My Gt Grandparents lived in Avenue Road and my Gt Gt Grandfather was John Baizon , a Lock Keeper.

Tish,

Good to see you on the Forum as I too am related by marriage to John Baizon (c 1816 Basingstoke - 1895) and his wife Caroline Roan (1824 Hampsted, Glos - 1904). The locks are still there, but John Baizon's lock-keepers house was demolished and the site of it is situated under modern industrial premises. I know of no photographs of this hosue and I've been researching this and related things for 30 years. I'll send you a message via the private messaging system with my email address and if you wish to discuss the family history, please email me.

Maurice
