Lion and Dragon Meriden Street

Hi, Could I have some help on a Public House that was on Meriden Street Digbeth - it was call The Lion & Dragon and it is on the 1891 Census.
would you have any information, Map and Photo of this pub. Many thanks for you help

In 1890 and 1892 directories it is listed as #65 John Davis beer retailer and not named as a pub.

Going back in the pub's history, landlord John Davis seems to have been, I think, a type of agent (referred to as 'stakeholder' in some newspaper adverts) taking fees on running events at Aston Park. There was even a cup held at the Lion and Dragon bar.

The Lion and Dragon was one of 18 pubs awarded compensation in 1906 by the Birmingham Licensing Bench. Doesn't say exactly why, so was it earmarked to be demolished ?

At that time there was a campaign to close down "redundant" pubs. This was undoubtably influenced by teetotal members of the council, but in many streets there were several pubs close together (thus the term redundancy), and it is not unreasonable to consider thast a reduction in some areas would be no great loss, especially as the ones chosen were often rather insanitary. They all had a right of appeal. This was done under the Licensing Act of 1904, and compensation had to be given to those affected, though I would think Thomas Williams would have been more affected than any of the other people mentioned, yet got a miniscule amount compared to them
