Hi RobertS

I have a few photos but not of the whole street... I will have a look through for you. I haven't actually got around to posting photos on this site ... so it maybe that I will have to e-mail them over to you. My family had the building of 265 and 264 Aston Road by Gosta Green Library... and the yard came out into Legge Street. Also some lock up yards... and I have one of my dad locking up the big gates for the last time before the bulldozers went in.... some of the buildings to the side had already gone.

I have put some postings on for Aston Road, Gosta Green.. The Fountain (I think) which stood by Gosta Green Library... there is a photo of the fountain with the Legge Street sign on the wall. Will have another look for you when I have time.

Legge Street and Aston Road

RobertS. Just a thought I know that 265 and 264 Aston Road are under the Students Union... and have a 2007 photo of the area. Also a photo from a book of the University with Aston Road still in tact. Georgie

On the right hand side by the tram is The Fountain, Gosta Green Library, and 265 etc Aston Road... Legge Street was at the back of all of this... and met up at The Fountain. Is this any good to you? Georgie

Thanks

Thanks for the help and the photo of the fountain. I have sent you my address in case you turn up any more. My interest is that my GG grandfather had workshops at 21 Legge Street. His father was a filemaker who had branched out into Gun Finishing. The family story is that the workshops were 'next door' to a gun maker.

I found this early photo of Legge St, any good. ?

Thanks Postied

Thanks this is the first one I have seen.

I have looked closeley for numbers or 'distinguishing features' to place on a map but can't see any but is proabbly representative of the houses turned to workshops.

many thanks again

Thanks Postied for the photo, you have come up trumps once again. My g.g. grandparents lived at no.68 Legge Street, in 1871, I think it was a pub but can't find my notes at the moment.

Wow... thank you Postie for putting the photo of Legge Street on. I wonder if this side of Legge Street backed onto Aston Road... or whether it was the other side of the road. My family had 9 and 10 Legge Street as Workshops. Georgie

The name is Benjamin Sheldon.

Benjamin is believed to have been born in 1791 in Warwickshire (from his death certificate and census returns). He married Elizabeth (H)eaton when aged 23, George and Elizabeth Whitall witnessed the marriage. Elizabeth Whitall was the only one to sign her name.

We are still trying to track down the origns of Ben after 20 years!

He was a filemaker at the time of his marriage. He and Elizabeth had already conceived their first child Harriet who was born 6 months later (IGI). Benjamin was living at Tranter street (or Elizabeth returned home for the birth). Two years later in 1816 their second child Elizabeth was born at Cross Street off Coleshill Street.

In 1835 when he was aged 44, it appears that Benjamin was in business on his own account at 2 Court Russell Street and may have been living there. He had four children and possibly five including James.

In the years spanning 1839 to 1841 it appears the family moved to 9 Sheep Street whilst he took up business at 21 Legge Street.

By 1841 when Benjamin was 50, the three eldest children had left home. Benjamin junior age 23 was established as a filemaker probably working with his father; whilst William also a filemaker age 15, was working in the original premises in Russell Street, and living at home in Sheep Street.

(James age 10 was working as a pen holder maker.) Benjamin had expanded the business to include riflemaking and gun finishing. (Legge Street was in the gun quarter.)

Benjamin and Elizabeth continued to have children until Elizabeth was 45 with Rebecca being born in 1838. They had 7 children and possibly an 8th, Ann, who was living with Benjamin junior in 1841.

Benjamin died at 9 Sheep Street in December 1846 age 55, from 'chronic bronchitis, 14 weeks', in the presence of his son William.

Reply to RobertS..regarding Sheep Street

Hi RobertS,
Georgie here.
My family had a Warehouse/Yard in Sheep Street too. I have the original papers for My great grandfather buying Centaur Tool Works at 59,60 and 61 Sheep Street in 1915 for £ 560 pounds.. Also the selling of the property in 1971 for Aston University. I only have one photo.... and I don't think it can be of much use to you... it is of my father sitting at a trestle table in the yard doing paper work... with loads of trestle tables behind him. This was a storage yard for the marquees etc... I know we had a very big fire here in the 1960's !!

I do remember Sheep Street... as I went to school in Corporation Street...my school used to use Kyrle Hall for P.T. and I used to get dropped off at Birmingham Central Fire Station and walk around the building to get to Sheep Street. Little did I know that I was so near to Aston Road... but at 14.. I wasn't interested in Family History.
Georgie.

My g.g. grandfather John Raybould was a publican at The Dog & Duck, 40 Sheep Street, in 1861 does anyone have a photo of it? Was it still there in your time Georgie?

Thanks for the information Postied, when the library opens again for Family Research I will enquire whether they have any photos.

I was going to say I cannot remember a Pub at all... but as it closed in 1911... I'm not that old :). I can only remember my dad's yard which was near the Aston Road end.... a neighbour of ours in Erdington had his works in Sheep Street too... a Harold Kinman... and this was right opposite Kyrle Hall. There was a Shop on the corner the same side as Kyrle Hall. That's all I can remember as a 14 year old.

Hi. I worked for Edgar Vaughans in Legge St. around 1958/ 60, they were oil specialists and had a factory distribution centre in the bit of Legge St. between Aston Rd. and Bagot St. right opposite the Midland Counties Dairy.

The first pic was taken in Legge St. outside the works of Edgar Vaughans.

This is a fabulous photograph, I have discovered that my family lived in Legge street, the names were Hammond,Toole and Arkinstall, they lived at No 6 in court 3 and No 8 respectively. Any more pictures or any one have details of these names on their tree would be amazing. Please !!

How can I view this please?

Hello Kate.... mine is the same photo as Postie has put on the site. I found a photo of the Old Fountain which stood on the corner by the Library, it was in a book not sure if I can find it on-line. I will try for you. The Library was right behind it and on the right of the Library was Aston Road and the first house 265 was where my family lived and had N.Budd and Son. To the left of the Library was Legge Street. Georgie.

Hi Kate... I know that this is not a Photo of Legge Street but can you find a photo that Vivienne 14 posted May 9, 2021 on this site under History and Nostalgia.. Neighbours and Streets. Page 3.. she has put a 1934 photo of Gosta Green on.. The Old Peacock Pub is on the left.. if you can find the Delicia Cinema in the middle - Aston Road is to the left of that. You can just about see where the Old Fountain is between the 2 trees. so Legge Street is to the left of that.. I can see a lorry coming up Legge Street... that would be just about where the back gates of 265 Aston Road would be.
There is a photo of the Old Fountain in a book called Birmingham Past & Present .. In My Father's Footsteps by Mark Norton. Georgie.

Hi Kate.. I have just typed in on Google search: 1925 photo of Gosta Green... and it came up with the photo that I have. It is looking at the whole of Gosta Green and in the back ground is Legge St//The Library with Fountain//Aston Road.
Also Postie has posted on March 18, 2006 another photo of Gosta Green... it has a tram in the front of the photo with a CHUNKY advert on the front of the tram. If you can find that on this site then... look to the left and you can clearly see the Fountain and the Library is behind it and the street to the left Legge Street.
My family also had workshops at 9 and 10 Legge Street. A friend photographed the Fountain for me in 2006 ... where it stands today which is not far from the original place. Georgie
