Leeks Limited - Alma Street Newtown

GBWADD91

Brummie babby
Hi to all,

I am hoping that someone would be able to help me find photos of the company (Leeks Limited) that was on Alma Street in Newtown until around 1995 when it was sold to Arhibold Kenricks in West Bromwich, my Mom worked there I believe from 1983 - 1995 before she moved to Kenricks West Bromwich after the company was sold

I beleive the company was owned by Mr Michael Leek, I am really struggling to find any photos almost as if the company never existed. It most definitely existed as I remember going there a couple of times as a child and some of the staff bought me a bar of chocolate from the canteen whilst I waited for my Mom to finish

My Grandad worked for Martindale Crocodile Works further down the road which I also went to a few times too (although I was never alowed inside most parts)

Leeks was located on the corner of Alma Street adjacent to Clifford Street

Thank you in advance

Hi Lyn, thank you so much for your prompt response and the picture you have provided.

I have really struggled to find any pictures of the Leeks building when it was a factory, my Mom used to take me to the shops that were underground just down the road (more opposite the Crocodile Works) which I thought was really cool being a young lad

Yeah it is all apartments down there now, I had a friend who lived in one of the Crocodile Works apartments. Strange to think my Grandad worked there and now I have friends who live there and where my Mom worked is now where people live

I spent a lot of my childhood in Newtown, my Great Grandparents lived in Unett Street, my Grandparents lived in Hospital Street and then moved to Farm Croft.

My Nan & Grandad used to take me to a lot of pubs when I used to stay of a weekend and we would also walk into Town (old Bullring and Rag Markets etc) when they lived in Farm Croft

My Great Grandparents used to take me into town on the 46 which we used to catch at the bottom of Unett Street (bus stop near to where the flats used to be before pulled them down and built houses)

Fond memories of a very happy childhood

Thanks Lyn, I will have gander through the Hospital Street and Unett Street threads, my memories of Newtown are from around the mid-80’s through to about the late 2000s.

Other than driving through the area and the odd visit to The Unity Club (for family parties and Christmas/New Year Parties) I no longer visit the area as I don't have any family living in Newtown, my Great Grandparents passed away in 2008 and my Grandparents moved out of the area in 1998.

I find this website forum very interesting and also very useful, the people on here are very helpful and polite. Everyone seems to be very cheerful and there are some interesting reads and pictures

PJMBURNS has helped me with a few queries in the past, I am very grateful for all the help I have received
