Hi
I am researching my mother's family - Layland - earliest I can find is thomas layland b c 1813 in Staffordshire, he lived in in Aston with wife Maria Oldbury. I cannot find any of the family in the 1871 census. His son, also Thomas was in the 2nd Battalion of the 21st Fuseliers, in Cheriton Kent in 1861. The rest of the family were in the parish of St Silas/ Aston in 1861.

Can anyone help me - as I am not local I am not very clear where exactly they were.

Layland Family, West Brom

Hello & Welcome Pannieoval :)

Your folks Thomas Layland & Maria Oldbury married in West Bromwich,
July/Aug/Sept Quarter of 1838, Volume reference 18 page 549
You can get the marriage certificate quoting as above (£7-oo).

West Bromwich is quite near to Birmingham, actually just the other side
of Handsworth,,, probably 4-5 mile from Aston, thru Witton, Thru
Birchfield, Thru Handsworth then West Brom (Staffs)
So they could be Villa or West Brom supporters,, oooh!,

Will check out a bit more later now we got a grounding Ok,
well myself or some of t,others on here will now its a roll,
Cheers to the Dreaming Spires,, John Y

I have been unable to find Maria in 1871.....in 1891 she was living with her youngest daughter Jane in Birmingham.

Hi

Many thanks for replies:

1901 census - Thomas Layland (b c 1840) living in W Bromwich with wife Margaret and 4 children, while my gmother - Annie Kate was a domestic servant in Wednesbury - must have been where she met my gfather John William Eccles a scot whose father had relocated from Glasgow.

1891 census - Thomas Layland junior working as fitter in Bilport Lane W Bromwich with wife & 5 children. His mother Maria was living with daughter Jane now married to Arthur Crisp a "jeweller in gold" in Theodore Street, Birmingham.

1871 census - on Thomas junior's brother easily traced : John Layland (b1839) living with wife Jane and 4 children in St Stephen parish, Birmingham - he was an edge tool maker - he later moved with his family to Sheffield and then Ecclesall Bierlow in Yorkshire. Two other brothers also went to Sheffield, William and Alfred.

Any thoughts as to why no trace of rest of family in 1871 - I have searched for all of them individually - understand Thomas junior might have been off fighting - and Thomas senior might have died?

Thoughts, incomplete on census

Hi Pannieoval, :)
Seems you have got most of your Layland,s quite
nicely through censii & B M D,s,,, its just annoying when "some" escape
Maybe,, got into "Institutions", workhouse,s, trouble with "prison" then
convict shipped to Aussie? (lucky buggas eh!)
Or may have just been at Work or in the Pub, not bothered Census,
possibly emigrated, Canada etc.
Speculations & searching could be endless but you done well so far.
Cheers & best regards, John Y
