Ashur Law, Mexborough (no date of birth)

had son

Ashur Law b ABT 1834 d ABT 1878
m Mary gladsby b 1831 d 1885

according to information, they had 11 children, i can only find 2

1 Arthur George Law b 1854 d 1946
2 Frederick Law b 1862 d 1947 m
Emma Helliwell b 1865 d 1900

Apparently, Emma died a painful death with a long standing effect of the birth of Hubert her last child

Frederick and Emmas children i have found, it's just strange i can't find the other 9 of Ashur (2) and Mary's, they can't just have disapeared, and i can't seem to find Ashur 1 at all

Re: Ashur Law

They are the ones i found but something does not sit well, if the 1861 census says Ashur 2 was 29, that means he was born 1832 not 1834 as i have. Arthur George was 7 in the 1861 census born 1854, and 26 in the 1881 census born 1855, Mary in the 1861 census was 28 born 1933, in the 1881 census she was 50, born 1831, the errors go on, no something is wrong, have been puzzeling on it for months, i leave it, come back, leave it, i cant figure it out, also, cordila is missing off the 1881 census and i can find no record of her death, and where did matilda go, i don't know but something does not tally up. i give up with them.

thanks but this family just baffel me, there are either too many children, not enough or the dates just dont work out. maybe

Re: Ashur Law

the old man is going to have look at them tomorrow, i think i have gone wrong with the census dates, to be honest i still do not know, may be him in doors can figure it out, my problem is getting to grips with the children being named after the parents, did they not think how confusing it would be for in later years trying to figure them all out, its been one of them days, i'm off to bed

Thanks all,

Re: Ashur Law

A change of one or two birth years on a Census and other documents means nothing... People back then often couldn't read, write or even count as we do to day, so the numerator did it for them. Also if the child's birthday was close to the census day ages were often rounded up and down.
That is the reason ages and name spellings seem to change, there was also a very strong family naming patten used in the past, even down to many children being lumbered with their mother's maiden name as a second name.
English Naming Patterns 1700-1875

1st Son -------------Father's Father

2nd Son ----------- Mother's Father

3rd Son ----------- Father

4th Son ------------Father's Eldest Brother

1st Daughter -------Mother's Mother

2nd Daughter ----- Father's Mother

3rd Daughter ------Mother

4th Daughter ------Mother's Eldest Sister

and so forth.

Not much help but we've all been there....:)

Re: Ashur Law

i certainly agree with pom about the dates of birth. 2 years difference is absolutely nothing unusual. you have a lot of names that do match up census to census so i would think it was the correct ones. cordellia could have been staying with relatives or a servant somewhere.
anyhow keep trying dont give up chris
