I'm looking for information about Jemima LAVY, born Birmingham about 1807. LAVY is her married name - she is a widow in 1851 with 2 children, Emma and Sarah Ann (born abt 1844 B'ham). I don't know her married name. She married Richard GRETTON in 1853 and in 1861 lives with him and his 2 children and her daughter Sarah. It's Sarah I'm after ultimately, but I can't find her after 1861. Does anyone recognize these names?

thanks,
Sally

Sorry I can't find records of Emma ... what age was she in 1851 as you said she was on the census ?
I have also looked under Jemima, as Emma could have been shortend if she was named after her Mother.

Thank you so much for all that info!! That is very kind of you. I have a greatgrandmother named Maria JONES (born abt 1860), and the family story is that her mother was called Sarah or Selina LEVI. Her father was named on her marriage cert as Levi JONES, pearl button maker. I have found Levi in all censuses - he married Catherine DEVY and had several children with her, none by name of Maria. Can't find a birth cert for Maria, or her appearance on any census before 1881. I have always wondered if she was Levi's illegitimate daughter. Could never find a Sarah/Selina LEVI/LEVY, but recently found the above Sarah LAVY, living quite close to Levi JONES, as a 17-year old, and her brother was also a pearl button maker. So you see I'm grasping at straws here! The other thing is that Maria's mother was supposedly Jewish - this according to my Dad's elderly cousin who is Maria's eldest granddaughter. Hence my need to find out more about Jemima! So the LEAVY name is quite interesting and could easily morph into LEVI - doesn't explain the Jewsih ancestry though - neither does WILKES from the sounds of it. But very intriguing still.

Sarah's sister Emma was born about 1839 according to the 1851.

Many thanks again for helping me - this is a puzzle I have been working on for several years. :-)

I found Emma in 1841 as a 3-year-old with her (unmarried) mother Jemima - surname WILKES. Have found a couple of marriage possibilities for her - perhaps a clue will turn up there.

Glad to have been of some help, you do seem to have a puzzle... spelling of names in the past were not as they are today, they were often spelt the way 'The Listener' heard them ...
The name 'Levi' is of Jewish/Hebrew origin .... In the New Testament of the Bible this was anothername used for the apostle Matthew, so there could be some truth in the Jewish connection. However the name has been used as a European Christian name since the Protestant Reformation in the mid 1600's.
