Just been glancing through the Oct.edition of Carl Chinn's "Brummagem" mag. and am a little confused by one of the photographs It is supposed to be a view looking down Park Lane,Aston towards Newtown Row.(1969)
I am sure Park Lane ran from High St. to Aston Cross. Not quite sure where High St. ended and Newtown Row started, always thought it was just past the Bartons Arms.
In the distance, on the photo', a store/shop named "Lathams" can be seen. Does anyone recall this name ? Where was the shop situated?
This might help to clear my confusion!!!

Thanks Oldtimer for your reply.
I can only assume that there is an error with description under the photo I mentioned.
I am certain it is not a view down Park Lane at all!
If there was a street opposite the Lathams you recall, its possible the view in question was down that street.
Thanks again....

Haven't seen the October issue of the Brum magazine, but Lathams curtain
and drapery shop was on Nechells Green for years, but later probably late 60s early 70s moved to a shop on the corner of Rocky Lane/Aston Lane
opposite the Golden Cross public, until recently and probably still is, it is in
Nechells Park Road, the section between the old Rocky Lane and Aston Church Road, near Wing Yips, I used to pass it daily when I drove to work, but haven't been that way for some time.

Thanks Sylvia,
Your info. may mean that the photo was taken looking down Park Lane towards Aston Cross.(Circa 1969) and not Newtown Row.

Ray, I will try and get a copyof the Brum magazine when I go shopping tomorrow, but I have just re-read my reply, it should have read on the corner of Rocky Lane/Aston ROAD, if my memory serves me right it was next door to the Municipal Bank.

the photograph is Park Lane looking down to Aston Cross

taken from 1973 Kelly's

I bought the Brummagem magazine today, the photo is definitely looking down Park Lane towards Aston Cross, the car lot shown in the foreground is on the corner of Park Lane and Thomas Street, and prior to that it was a tiny filling station. I have checked the phone directory and the shop in Nechells Park Road which I thought was Lathams is in fact Bullivants and it has been trading in the Nechells area for many years. sorry for any confusion.

Thanks folks,
Your observations bears out my theory that the caption under the photo in the mag. was wrong.
It had confused the 91 year old mother of one of our friends who lived in Potters Hill many years ago.
Thanks again.

Ray.
