Langford, William Albert et al

fellowkev

master brummie
Hi I am looking for anybody who knows of any Langfords in Birmingham. It is not a very common name.
My great grandfather was Albert William Langford, born 1873 in Cape street. During the 1920's he was a curate at the Birmingham court house on Market street. He married Elizabeth Berryman in 1901.
My grandmother, Jessica Langford, often spoke about how she and her 9 siblings, lived under the courthouse, and that some of her uncles were in the police force (or fire). She is no longer living so I cannot clarify her statements, (which get fuzzier with the passage of time).
Here are their children, if anything might ring a bell--they were all born between 1903 and 1922, and lived in the Ladywood area, mainly
May Elizabeth Langford
Theodore Albert Langford
Jessica May Langford
Winnifred Alice Langford
Clarisa Ellen Langford
Nora M Langford
Joan Langford
John Langford

Thanks
Kevin

Langford Family

Hi There Fellowkev
Just Came Across Your Thread ,and I See You Are Looking For A Langford Family ,from Lady Wood .
Well , That Caught My Attentention ,because I Was A Big Friend
Of A Langford Family Many Years Ago In Lady Wood ,and I Would Very Much Like This To Be The Same Family ,
First Of All The Father Was John ,and The Mother,s Name
At This Precise Time I Cannot Think Of Her Name ,for The Love Of Money , But There Kids Was A Ronald, David , Francis , Susan ,
Whom Was My Friends ,and We Was In Each Others Houses In Ladywood, At The Time They Was Living In King Edwards Rd ,
And I Was Living At 243 King Edwards Rd And They Lived On The Oppersite Side Of The Road ,when They Started To Clear The Area
They Moved To Winson Green Rd ,when They Started To Clear The Shops On Winson Green Rd ,they Finaly Moved Up To The King Standing Circle ,the Name Of The Road I Do Not Recall ,
But Its A Road Up The Left Hand Side Of The Bingo Hall At The Circle.
That I Was Told About 4 Years Ago ,i Have Been Meaning To Try And Find Them Myself For Old Time Sake
Look Foreward To Hearing From You Soon , Best Wishes Astonian ,;;;

Hi Astonian, thanks for the information. I know little about the family's details during more recent times, because my grandparents passed away before I became interested in genealogy. Isn't life like that?!
Anyway, I will be seeing my father this week (his mother is Jessica Langford). I will bring the details you have provided, and see what I can discover. I did have relatives on King Edwards road during the early part of the century, so there is potential there.
I will write back soon
Thanks and all the best to you,
Kevin

One other thing Astonian, how old was the father, John? Could he have been born around 1922, or earlier?
I have 3 marriages for Langfords in Brum:

Marriages in Birmingham for John Langford between 1939 - 1950
2nd 1942 John W. Langford/Biddle
4th 1949 John V. Langford/Simpson
1st 1950 John Langford/Clarke

thanks!

HI Astonian,
great information! I will speak to dad today. I will let you know if I am able to jog his memory. My dad (Ronald Fellows) is a true brummie--and still sounds like one after 38 years in the States--he has lots of memories of his younger days in the Ladywood and Hockley areas (he was born in 1935).
I did not recieve a seperate email from you, by the way Astonian

Speak with you soon,
All the best,
Kevin

Hi Astonian,
I spoke with dad. He does not remember John Langford. He said that the family was so large (16), it was impossible to remember everyone. He does remember going to visit his grandparents Albert William and Elizabeth Langford, at their home at the County Court on Corporation street (I wonder if it is still there). They lived in one of the apartments that was below street level. This was in the 1930's and 40's. He was once the curate there, and then a police superintendent of sorts (I have not found proof of this yet, I need to get over to Brum'). Dad said that most of the male children were in the police force or were firemen. He also said that Albert and Elizabeth Langford were very strict with their children, and victorian in their attitudes and mannerisms. The apartment was always immaculate--everything was in its place, and it was very quiet--children were meant to be seen and not heard... (this from a teenager's perspective)

Notwithstanding, your memories have given me another lead to investigate. Thanks for that :)

All the best,
Kevin

Albert Langford

Hi Kev ;
Just Been Reading Your Thread This Morning ,
And The More You Told Me ,i Am 90, Percent Sure This Is The Langford Family You Want
I Have Thought Long And Hard On This One ,and In My Mine
I Have Transported My Memories Back In Time,and Considering The Discription Youhave Described These Are The Family You Want
I Seem To Recall Ronnie Said His Father Had, Or Did Have Some Kind Of Connection At Steel House Lane ,and At That Moment Of Time
I Thought To My Self , Yeh, More Like A Crim,
Because Some Days When I Seen Him And He Never Seen To Move From This Particular Chair, And They Was In An Victorian Mannor
Attitude To Wards There Kids,and The House Had That Appearence As Well, Also As I Have Said They Had A Rellative Living In Frankfort St. I Have Got A Cousin Whom Runs Walter Smiths In The Cicle Shopping Center, I,ll Try And Asked Him If He Knows Of Ronnie Langford ,or Of The Langford Family Whom Are Living Local
I,ve Got Another Cousin Whom Lives In Huntingham,she Use To
Work In The News Agent On The Circle Next To The Bingo Hall
It Could Be They Have Moved Or Ronnie May Have Died ,i Don,t Know
Best Wishes Astonian ;

Hi Kevin, Or should I say Second Cousin. I am the daughter of Nora Langford, and your Dad's cousin. He is one of 26 children of the 10 Langford children which included your grandmother. Iam in touch with 9 of the cousins which include 2 of my brothers.
The Court house where your gran lived is still the main court house building for Birmingham, in Corporation Street, and I too remember stories my mum told about living there. I would love to hear from you and share lots more information, and you missed on off your list, there was a William aswell, 3 boys and 7 girls, but although the boys married and had boys, none of them have produced boys themselves, so no more Langfords.
Please reply.

Regards, Lynne

Hi Lynne, well this is a marvelous surprise! I am very pleased to hear from you.
I can't wait to share information about my memories of my dear grandmother Jessica Fellows nee Langford, with you. I had been in regular contact with another cousin a few years ago, you may know her--Peggy Brown nee Langford, --the daughter of your mom's sister Elsie Langford (who married John Evans in 1929). Peggy and her husband John Brown are an amazing couple, and they have great family stories to tell.

I have been away for a couple of days and just got in, so I need to get some thoughts together Lynne. I will share our stories on this superb website, and also by email and Facebook (I see you just sent a friend request)
Take care, speak very soon
Kevin

Astonian, glad you got some great news from Edd. I will have to do some digging to see if there is any relationship to my Langfords
All the best to you
Kevin

as i said i would dearly love to track him ; as i know he would be overwhelmed in seeing me ,we go back many years from boy to man;

for any rembrances of the war in the cellers
best wishes astonian;;

hello astonian.i have been trying to track down ronnie for you, ringing different members of the family,unfortunately no one is sure of his address. BUT i have a lead for you marsh lane erdington, the same side as the bingo hall ie the left, in the first twenty houses some are converted to flats, he was last known to be living in one of these. information supplied by a elderly uncle so dont shoot the messenger if wrong, thinking about it it would make sense as it would be across the road from his mother when she was alive, maybe one of the good people on here could check the electoral list for us, if i can be of any help feel free to ask GOOD LUCK. edd
