King Kong Statue

I may have some members disagree with me but I still think it's a cheap and nasty monstrosity, sort of thing you would expect to see in a fairground, like so much of Birmingham's so-called 'modern art' . Apologies to members with a different view but I had to say it. I thought the same about that other fibre glass 'work of art' placed in centurian square (I believe some one set fire to it). Eric

Nice to see him back to his original colour. He's been painted Pink, Black also painted like John Bull.

I never saw it, but don't personally have a high opinion of it. But , of course, for some of those that did see it, it reminds them of pleasant memories

Maybe if Birmingham had not lost him we wouldn't feel the same affection!

A statue of King Kong by Nicholas Monro was commissioned in 1972 for display in Manzoni Gardens in The Bull Ring, in the centre of Birmingham, England. It was later displayed elsewhere in Birmingham, then at markets in Edinburgh, Penrith (where it was subsequently stored), and now at the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds.

The Arnolfini Gallery in Bristol owned a maquette of the statue which is now in the collection of Wolverhampton Art Gallery.

I believe after it was removed from Manzoni gardens, it went on display at a second hand car dealers owned by one of the Fewtrells on the Stratford Road in Sparkbrook.

It did, the car dealer was called "King Kong Kar Ko" it was just up by the redundant church

i dont remember the statue. only remember it at at car sales
