A former Mitchells & Butlers pub in Longbridge. On the corner of Bristol Road South and Tessall Lane. Not far from Northfield.

It was built in 1935 and is Grade II listed.

King George V Public House, Birmingham

Public house. 1935; by John Burgess Surman, for Mitchells and Butlers. Rendered brick with ashlar plinth and stone dressings. Plain tile gabled roofs. Rendered axial and lateral stacks with moulded stone caps and stone weathering to set-offs.
PLAN: Butterfly plan; the central range containing the public bar, beer store and entrances; smoke rooms and the services in flanking angled wings with assembly/dining and function rooms above.
Jacobean Domestic Revival style.

I first took photos of it when it was Emerald Cantonese Restaurant back in 2010. And it was still that until at least 2014.

Recently I noticed that it had been renamed to King Khan. It was as that from late 2014 until recently. An Indian Restaurant. But that closed down and is now The Old King George Balti House. Although the King Khan signs are still up.

The pub sign has always kept the image of King George V (although the other sides have the sign of the then restaurant owners).

As it was in 2010

Birmingham Mail says it may get turned into a KFC restaurant and Drive Thru!

A historic landmark former pub could be getting a new lease of life as a drive through KFC restaurant.

The King George V pub has stood at the junction of Tessall Lane and Bristol Road in Longbridge since 1935 and is Grade II listed.

It was converted first into the Emerald Chinese restaurant in 2000, and then later became the King Kahn Indian restaurant and Old King George Balti House before being closed down in 2017.

But new plans could now see it serving southern fried chicken in the near future.

Last year a series of planning applications to turn it into a care home or apartment block fell flat and now a KFC operator has come forward with a £2.5 million investment in the building.

A couple of images of the King George V back when it was doing what it was built for. The one photo looks to be close to when the pub first opened in 1937 the other dates from 1958.
