Hi Astonian,

Thr pub was The Vine and I am pretty sure it was an Ansells pub. My dad was a regular and he only drank Ansells. It changed its name to The Grapes, whatever for I do not know. It may well have changed again. I have not been in that area for some time.

The other pub in Muntz Street was The Red Lion. At one time it was kept by Joe Bradford who had played for The Blues and he still holds the record for most goals in a season by a Blues player - 32 goals. Joe has now passed on but his last pub was The Stockland.

I cannot see David Beckham running a pub when he retires.

hi old boy
thanks for coming back on this thread
but it was kierons place before changing to the vine which
was sold to the brewery whom inturned did renamed it the vine

Hi Astonian

The last time I saw the Vine it was all boarded up, its been a while so I don't know whats happening there now. Last I heard the pub opposite The White Lion near to the corner of Grange Rd had been converted to a curry house or similar. As I never used either of these pubs I can't give you any information on licensee or Brewery ownership.

Astonian,

We seem to be at cross purposes. The Vine, on the corner of Green Lane and Muntz Street, had had that name all my life (since 1927) and had always been a Ansells House. Sometime after the war it changed its name to The Grapes. Apparently it is now closed.

I have never heard of Kierons Pub. Perhaps the gaffer at one time was named Kieron and it thus became known as Kierons Pub but, to me, it was always The Vine. I spent many hours outside waiting for me dad.

hi oldboy and friends
first of all i must opologised to every bodyand to oldboy himself
because i have made a mistake after allregardingthe name kierons
because at the very top ofthe pub building on the gable ends
which where the no 8 bus stops out side the pub
and at the highest point ofthe building is inlaid the name of the pub
and unless you are on the bus and stare up you would not really notice the name so i have to admitt dear friends our friend oldboy is correct in what he has stated,
i have been mislaid by myself and because its many years i have ever passed that pubin the greenlane side of the building there was a sign that said keirons pub, clearly stated and it lookvery old sign
i there fore rang my daughter up whom lives not to far from there to go and check it out andthat she phoned me backand said he was right and it had to be what old boy had said it was a person whom took it onand renamed it that way and i havethought from the top of my head thinking of a pub that as never been mentioned
once again oldbysorry for putting you at the cross way purposes
best wishes astonian ;;

The first pic is the Vine that was, now called the Gables Tavern by the looks of it. What was the other pub called? it is just below the Vine in Muntz St.

Thanks for your reply. We all make mistakes. Some are disastrous such as Tony Blair with Iraq and Afghanistan. Some do not matter at all such as was it The Vine or Kierons.

As a matter of fact I take issue with BernieW as I reckon it was The Red Lion but what does it matter in the great scheme of things?

Hi Old Boy my sister in law's folks kept the pub in the early 70s and I lived around the corner in Grange Road and I'm sure it's the White Lion regards Bernie

Berniewm

I must surrender. Your memory is much more recent than mine. I left Small Heath in 1950 to live in Aston. All for the love of a good woman.
