Saturday November 28th

We have been given a large number of bulbs to plant and any help would be great. I think Brian deserves the help!:)

Times 10-1 & 2-4.

If anyone would like to come and help plant up graves beside the paths and/or their own relatives - as well as the 2 islands - that would be fantastic.

Small trowel, gloves, a dibber to make holes with... that's all that is needed
apart from food, drink, a smile, sensible shoes, possibly kneepads, Brolly, etc.

Thats sounds good to me. I'll bring along my grandson Sean (green Man):)

I will do my best to be there. I love Key Hill and I love planting bulbs - so perfect for me - and Brian certainly deserves the help!
Polly :)

Wendy, I'm so sorry but I have tickets for the Food Show at the NEC, I'm taking my neice. Anyway, wiv my bad back it would have been a no-no I'm afraid (honest : spinal stenosis!)
Charlie

I understand Charlie I know several who would love to help but health prevents this. See you at the next meet up!:)

Hello Wendy, I will bring the book to Key Hill during the times shown on this thread.
When I am planting I need a pad to kneel on and I have to be careful because of my plastic knee, and I need something to lean on so I dont fall forward onto my face. For those two reasons I will not be helpng but I hope it all goes well.

Just a reminder for tomorrow;

I was hoping to come along and plant some bulbs on my Relatives Graves,
However, having work done on the house and fence repaired so unable to make this date.

It is not a place I like going to on my own.
How often are Colin and Brian at the Cemetery ?
Perhaps I could come over on a day that they are there.

Have a good day on Saturday I am sure everyone will enjoy the friendly atmosphere.

Can we have some photographs of the event please.

Bo

Bo: Please don't worry about going on your own to Key Hill. I've been there alone on lots of occasions, there's never been a problem and I don't feel threatened. Lots of people use it as a cut-through, so there's usually someone about and police stepped up patrols so that there hasn't been an incident (that I know of) for ages and ages.
Charlie girl.

Unfortunatley , I do have cause to worry having had two incidents on separate occasions ,a year apart, one being in the cemetery it self ( whilst they were plenty of people in view ) and another as we were approaching the Cemetery in Pitsford street.
I was not alone but with a female friend.

Please note not in any way am I knocking the Cemetery, this could and does happen anywhere.

Bo

Sorry Bo; I didn't realise you'd already had problems there. I can only speak for myself and say I've never worried about going there. You're right, this can and does happen everywhere now, sadly. Hope you can get there with (male) company sometime soon.

I have been visiting for over five years and never had a problem. I saw undesirables when I first visited but don't see any now. Margaret at the Pen Room is often there on her own. As Charlie said there are many people who use the cemetery now just for a walk and dog walkers. The local comunity police are in there most days and so is Brian. I hope this thread does not put anyone off visiting it really is lovely.:)

Don't worry Froth it was very cold......mind you Stitch came to warm us up..lol

Great to see you and Pollypops today Wendy:):)have to say there is such a difference in the cemetery now than when i first went..Thank you so much for all your hard work.:)

I have to tell you with a teeny weeny bit of guilt that today was the first time I had actually been in that part of the cemetary. Although old and somewhat dilapidated, no not me I am talking about the cemetary, it is like all burial places. It was peaceful and tranquil. The best part of course was it kept Maggie quiet so we had a short spell of peace. That ended as soon as we got into the motor to come home. She almost sent me insane because she wanted liquorice. Talk about a naughty child. I eventually found a shop that hed some in stock. Maggie and my little wrinkle went in and when they came out again Maggie had a carrier bag full of liquorice sweets.
I digress, Wendy, we should be proud of you and your friends for all that you do at Key Hill, it contains so much history about this city that the Council ought to be duty bound to keep the place in pristine condition.

Stitcher it was lovely to see you all today thanks for dropping in. I would also like to thank Pollypops and Hubby for all their help! Key Hill Brian seems to work at twice the speed of all of us! A good job done by all can't wait until spring!!

just to digress a bit further Trevor you insisted on getting liquorice for Maggie you said stick some in her mouth to shut her up for a peaceful life:D just to add to that Key hill has had a lot of work done lately to improve it a special thanks to all the helpers they do a great Job should see the benefit when the bulbs come through and a special thanks to Brian who does a great job maintaining the place on a voluntary basis:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Be assured Wendy, it was our pleasure to see you and meet polypops.

Frothy, if you promise me a half pint next time we meet, I will confess something to you. O/k then it's a deal, I didn't plant any bulbs. No no no, I went to see Wendy and got a surprise because Pollypops was there as well. There you are Frothy, no need to feel guilty now. Whoever the rest of them are, they are doing a great job there Froth.

Cheers stitch. You can have that half with pleasure.
I was so impressed with the place when I was there last, so I'll be there in the spring to see them plants flowering:)

Can I just add my thanks to those who came to help today. We 'band of few' managed to plant 3,000 bulbs on the 2 islands, and around the Key Hill entrance. Bodging holes keeps you quite warm !

I am usually in key Hill Mon-Fri 10.00 - 3.30 'ish. Sats & Suns are usually either 10-12 or 1230-1630 depending on 'er indoors.

There is not usually a problem these days, but if you are arriving by car, please drive into the Cemetery, via Key Hill. Drive around with doors locked and go back out if you are not happy. If it is quiet (most times) you can park up and keep near the car !

If you do see a very strange, bearded old semi-baldy, with muddy knees - it's probably only me. hang around long enough and I will come and give you a leaflet or two!

If you have any graves you wish to have a few crocus, dwarf Daffs, blue Muscari or Hyacynths on let me know. I shall be planting the rest of the bulbs Sun/Mon.
You can email me on brian.southwell@yahoo.co.uk

To any members that have not been to Key Hill..I grew up in Hockley and had never been to Key Hill till last year..it was just a place as kids we would run past.....Thanks to Wendy on our last day out I learnt an awful lot ..Today I learnt the mortuary chapel was made from Weoley Castle Sandstone and that the catacombs were home to some Birmingham familys who were bombed out during the war..Wendy and Brian work really hard there... if you are in the area it really IS worth a visit:)

I have met both Wendy and Brian and been to Key Hill too...They do a Stirling job and their Commitment is Wonderful... It really should be maintained by the B'Ham Council as there are many Local and National Families/figures buried there... it should be a monument to our heritage... My Great Uncle Rupert Beeley is named on the 1WW monument, but buried in a communal plot with other soldiers from that conflict.

Well done everyone, I feel that just going there to see and view for the first time spurs you on to do more, and gives you a sense of it's importance to Birmingham City History.

Had a good time planting bulbs at Key Hill today. It was very cold but none of us seemed to notice it untill we stopped planting - good job we all wrapped up well. Lovely to see Wendy and Key Hill Brian again - both working hard as usual. Wendy is right - Brian planted 10 bulbs in the time it took me to plant 1! Also lovely to meet stitcher & wife. other half and Maggieuk (hope I got the names right)
Can't wait till the spring to see all the flowers.
Polly :)
