Hi, I have just found a very old looking thermometer with a brass scale with J Chisla, Hill Street, Birmingham on the top of the brass plate.
I am hoping someone will know who it is and an approximate age for it. I don't know if Chisla was a shop or a manufacturer.
I'm hoping someone will know.
Regards
D

Morning RobT , I got as far as entering into Google all sorts of variations on a Chisla search , the last one being Kelly's directory Birmingham 1900s ....then passed out at approximately 4am !!!
It's a bit of a strange looking thermometer tube , I found it in my garage yesterday in a box of s.... that I've had for years, I don't even know if it works ... just looked when taking the pictures and the temperature has moved since last night, but it seems to read upside down
Thanks again Rob,
Dave

... I should of gone to Specsavers... I didn't notice that it was a G not a C ... I can't get a picture to upload, it says the file is too large

Joseph Ghisla, picture frams maker, is listed in Kellys at Hill St from the 1980 edition till the 1915 edition. not listed in the 1921 edition. Before that he was at 25 Tonk St. In the earlier years there was also a Joseph Ghisla (father ??) listed as running a Girls school at 143 Bromsgrove St

Think that is 1880 not 1980 - typo.
The 1911 census posted by Alberta has his wife as a teacher which fits with a school.
