Jordan, Oak Tree Road

gaz1961

Brummie babby
Hi I am researching my grandfather and great grandfather both called Thomas Jordan. They lived and were born in Oak Tree Road Birmingham. My Grandfather ended up down here in Folkestone Kent but passed away in 1958. My father who passed some 5 years ago now didn't really know much about his fathers background and was surprised to find his father had a brother called William. Anyway if there are any Jordans still in the Birmingham area who can tell me a bit about that area of Birmingham (its in the all saints parish if that helps) or would just like to get in touch feel free. I have done quite a bit of research but have reached some dead ends.

Kind regards
Gary Jordan

I am not sure but the Thomas Jordan with brother William living in Oak Tree Road on the 1901 census seem to have Father James and Mother Lucy - James came from Gloucestershire. Lucy seems to die in 1905 and by 1911 census James is married again and is living with a wife several step children in Willersey plus William and Thomas. Is this the right family?

Agree MWS - posting at the same time.

Perhaps you could tell us what dead ends you have reached? Although as it looks likely they did not stay in Birmingham for long we may be limited in what we can help with.

If it is James instead of Thomas, then it looks fairly straightforward back to pre 1841. Mostly Little Compton area.

Hi thanks for getting back to me, everyone called him Jim but James was his middle name Thomas his first name. Thanks for the other info everyone I knew some but not all. I know his family originally came fro. Little Compton. But after that there are lots of gaps.
Kind regards
Gary

This is how I see your Jordan line...

Your grandfather, Thomas James Jordan b1901 son of James Jordan & Lucy Jane Lane

James Jordan b1874 son John Jordan & Eliza Eden

John Jordan b1837 son of Jonathan Jordan & Hannah Bishop

Jonathan Jordan b1805 is where there's a little confusion. He is listed as son of John & Deborah on his baptism, though it may actually be Robert & Deborah.

And going back to your original question, you may have Jordan relatives in Bham.

Your grandfather's brother, William John Jordan, appears to have moved to Essex but your great grandfather's brother, also William John Jordan lived in Bham for some time and all his children were born here, though at least one son emigrated to Australia.

You may also have Lane relatives in Bham as well, Lucy and her siblings were all born in Bham and at least one brother appears to have been still here in 1939.

Brilliant thanks so much . I'm just as interested in Birmingham as it was then, is this the best site for more of the general history of the area? Two of my great grandfathers, the other from the North East, moved to Folkestone once they had joined the army. Although 12 years apart and in different regiments, they were both stationed at the same camp, both married local women and both stayed in Folkestone.

The main dead end is from Little Compton, Gloucestershire onwards. I know James initally went to Evesham then to Birmingham, No idea why or though I can make an educated guess. Thomas also having a brother was a bit of a surprise. As I say neither my father or his elder sister were aware. Thomas died in 1958 and when I asked Dad whether his brother had attended the funeral he said no and he wasn't aware of the brother who I now know was living in Essex, not that far from here really. Thank you too for taking the time to get in touch.

Looking at the census it's not Oak Tree Road, it is Crabtree Road. This map is from 1889, no. 15 is marked with the pink dot...

In 1891 James Jordan's father in law Thomas Lane was living at no.15. In 1901 he is living at no. 19.

Just before the start of ww2 a register was taken. Less detail than a census. It has details on people alive in 1939 and was updated. It was used to issue ID cards and later set up NHS. some names are blanked out - these should be people alive when the register was released.
James and his second wife are on it. You can see the reg on Ancestry.

I think there is another William John Jordan in Essex. However the DoB on the death reg for Gloucs matches the date on the baptism so I ignored the Essex one. When I get chance I will double check.

On 1939 reg William Jordan is living at Aston Sub Edge. The address is simply No. 6 Aston Sub Edge. The blanked out entry is most likely their child. Albert is probably the brother of Agnes.
