JONES George, British Home Child

Cheryl Jones Bakker

proper brummie kid
I am posting a photo of my great-uncle George Jones who was re-united with some of his siblings after having been sent to Canada (along with his younger brother Frederick Howard Jones) in 1910 by the Middlemore Home. On the back of this photo is the information that this was a Sunday Mercury (Birmingham) photo. In the front row: Mary Ann "Polly" Jones, George Jones, and Leah (Jones) Castle. In the back row: May Jones and eldest brother Steve (Stephen William A.) Jones.

The children were baptised at St. James, Aston; parents were Stephen William Jones and Mary Ann Wills.

Re: George Jones, British Home Child

I have (since posting this photo) acquired George's passport. The only entries are for August of 1959 in New York, USA. There is no destination listed. A separate document lists a Canadian tax on a Brownie flash camera leaving the country for this time frame. The fashions of the women in the photo suggest that the year for this photo may be correct. George died in 1962 in Ontario, Canada, so the time frame fits. I also have photos of his younger sister's (May Alexander Jones, married to William Frank Herbert Spencer) family that he visited. My question is how do I find the newspaper article from that paper? I live in the US. Is there anyone who lives close enough to to research the article in the Sunday Mercury? It would probably involve searching about a month's worth of the publication. How do I find someone to help? I really need to read the story line that accompanies this photo.

Lyn, thank you so much. I'm at a loss. If I didn't live in the states, I'd buy you a pint or take you out for lunch. It would probably be any time in August.

How lovely the family were eventually reunited.
Good luck in the library Lyn :peaceful: I hope you can find the story for Cheryl.

Good luck with your search Cheryl. If anyone can find the article Lyn will. Here is a photo of St James, Aston which was demolished in the 60's I believe. My father was baptised here around 1911 as were his siblings.

I posted a longer "thank-you," but I lost it when I clicked on something that I shouldn't have (whatever it was). Sometimes I get lost on this forum. I think that I need to log on more often. :~) You all are so helpful, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

And I would! We could share stories, research agonies and successes. It is so difficult living an ocean away, but genealogists are the best people to turn to. Let me know if any of you need research in the United States. I'm always happy to help on this end.

All the best
Cheryl

thanks wendy..it was not too difficult to find as cheryl could give a month and year...i am also looking for another mercury article but this one will take longer to find as i have a 3 year window so i will just pick away at the months as and when i go to the library as it is very time consuming...
