I have come across some old notes i made whilst doing family history and for some unknon reason i failed to follow up on them.

It concerns John Wooley shown on the Birmingham 1861 census living on Lichfield Street, age 72 and a retired Royal Marine.

Given his age, he would have been born c1789, means he may well have taken part in the Napoleonic wars of 1803-1815.

Where would you suggest i look to further research this person?

Any thoughts would be welcome, thank you..
 
Just the usual places, censuses, parish records and military records on the genealogy sites. If you're fortunate there will be service records.

He appears to have married Jane Stanbury in 1818 at St Andre's, Plymouth. For him it says of the Royal Marines.

His name seems to be spelt various ways which may make it a little tricky.

They had at least 4 children, all baptised at East Stonehouse though they might not have all been born there. One, Damaris, married a Daniel Shaw in 1843 Birmingham.

In 1841 they are listed as Wolley and living on Old Thomas St. John is listed as a Pearl Button Maker.

Jane died in her 90s in 1882.

There are some possible military records on findmypast including Royal Marines service records but not sure if they are his.
 
looks like hes living in weaman st in 1851..pensioner royal marines
son george age 25 and daughter mary jane 21 living with them

I would look at the National Archives for records of Royal Marines involved in Napoleonic Wars.
Some records are now online.

there is a register of service record for a john wolley (think it must be wooley) born 1790 could be him...its on ancestry

also a record for the royal chelsea hospital pensioners admissions and discharges which could be him but its on fold3 so you would have to subscribe to that to view the record

There are a number of military records, some with scans, on familysearch. However the details are few.

This pension record from 1830, listing a John Woolley with 21 years service in the Royal Marines which ties in with a somewhat...

It was Damaris Woolley i was researching and must have made the note whilst doing that.
