Jessop - Birmingham and Wednesbury pubs and small breweries, come across these?

Hi
I've searched your wonderful forum in the hope I may find one of the establishments I've found my gt grandfather, John William Jessop born 1874 living and working in the censuses.
I was wondering if any of you have knowledge of pubs/breweries at these addresses
1881 Morville Brewery 95 Morville St Birmingham (actually run by Herbert Cornelius Jessop 1845 his father)
1891 Sycamore Tavern 175 Park Road Aston Manor
1901 62 Foley St Wednesbury, family stories suggest this was a pub , my grandmother was born here and slept in a basket under the bar.
Interesting enough there seemed a great family sideline of baking ie making of pikelets, crumpets and muffins. His grandfather, William Jessop 1817 also was making crumpets in the 1851.
Best regards
Lulibell

hi
used to drink sometimes in the Rowley rag in Rowley Regis, also in Black heath and Cradley heath. long time ago now and cannot remember the pubs
but a great time back in the early 60's

The 1901 census certainly lists your ancestor , John Jessop, as a barman at 62 Foley St, but there is no indication in the 1881 or 1891 censues that no 62 is anything other than a house. The 1904 Kellys does not list a pub in Foley St, and Hitchmough's "Black country pubs" does not list one in Foley St either. could it be that your grandmother , presumably Doris, slept under the bar where he worked, but that this was not no 62 foley St.

William Millner was landlord of The Sycamore tavern, from 1878 – 1908, being followed by William Millner junior.(there in 1912) A different landlord was there in 1876, The pub changed to the Sycamore Stores between 1940 and 43, but it was listed several times after this as the Sycamore Stores PH, so presumably it was a pub. While with that name. The pub disappeared after 1967. the sycamore tavern is the Ph on the corner of Park Road and Sycamore road on thee map. Nowadays Park road is chewed up, but does join sycamore road, the tavern being just under the Aston expressway.

Herbert Cornelius Jessop was listed as a beer retailer at 95 Morville St 1880 (& from what you say also in 1881), but has gone by 1883. It is named in Kellys as The Morville Arms 1888 - 1900, but has disappeared by 1903. Beer retailer could mean an off licence, but often meant an on-licenced premises, very often one that was a beerhouse (which had a licence to sell beer (& cider?) only. Beerhouses, though they were named , were not usually listed in Kellys under that name.. The pub was one of (or possibly both) of the buildings marked in red on the map. Ladywood road (approximating to the position now of Ladywood ringway) is the diagonal road across the bottom. The lower part of Morville st is still there, though not the buildings.

Thank you so much for taking time to reply to me.
This morning, it was a lovely surprise to find you'd replied again.
It's wonderful to be able to find out about our ancestors lives like this; you've made my day!
This is so interesting that I'm sharing this with my parents, sisters, cousins and distant cousins!

Dear all readers of this thread,
May I point out that Herbert Cornelius Jessop was born in 1851, not 1845, sorry.I was relying on my memory.
Thank you
