Jening street and wood cock street

Astonian

gone but not forgotten
HI Guys
i went to birmingham yesterday to a company to purchase five computor monitors
in jenning st which is next to wood cock street and i was shocked to see the state of the
area ;which i thought i knew but to e quite honest i would get lost now in brum
i lost an hour to get the right side of the aston science complex
around that city i went if once it must have been 12times i was cussing to myself
i finalaly got jenning street but could not find the big complex[ rand there office and told her where i was parked she said drive along the rd abit further and we will come out to you
as i drove along i was out side the sack of pototoes and she said turn around we are the other end of jenning street as i turned around and drove back she eventualy came out
when i done my transactionfor the monitors she helped carry them out
normally she sad when we mention woodcock st baths people do not have a problem in finding us and she pointed across the rd t the baths ,i said god heavens i never
reconised them at all they lookeddirty and exhausted
i should have reconised them because i used to go there wit the school and got
my pass and said i cannot beleive how this city as changed
personally i think its for the worse all the building are all on top of each other
much to crowded to gether
what are these planners try to do .make a minnie new york or copy there dezign
even around the marlket area what a diaster to brum i am glad when i left
when i did years ago , [ sorry brummies our kids ] brum ain,t brum no more
best wishes Astonian ;;;;

Couldn't agree more, Astonian. I had occasion to visit Aston University about 30 years after I left Brum and had the same problem. I could see it, but couldn't reach it. Fine if you're approaching it from the direction of the M6, but not from the direction of Kings Heath. In desperation I finally cut up a bus, to the accompaniment of much horn blasting, and made a dive for it! My Longmores, who lived in Woodcock Street for over 50 years, must be turning in their graves! (Rant over!)

Maurice

HI MAURICE
Yes it,s very frustrating i came down the motor way and i thought i know where i am going
i worked at randle brothers many many years ago up dartmouth circus
i will approach from that way turned in to jennng rd but for love or money i could not figure how on earth do i get that side to wood cock street i must admitt i was loosing my ragg
if iwent about six different ways but like you thought i will cross the reservation
but to me it looked like a bus route there was a convy of them all coming but also there was raised pavements , i thought shall i or shall i not
then i eventualy found my way right round digbeth and the market place
dassing the kerryman pub i motice of occ,s club as gone
well the sign had gone ; any idea if nd how long its gone
and i thought they had moved the ld coach station ut it looed as if its still there in rea st
and thats when i aid to my son you will not catch me wanting to come ba to brum to live
and he agreed i beleive the word is progress .
and what about the americans hom have took over cadburys chocie bars and coco cola bars
by the score it ain.t gonna take off is it
take care maurice speak soon ASTONIAN ;;;

We can get from Digbeth around to Colemore Row also make our way to Broad Street. We could get to Woodcock Street but could not direct from the top of our head.
I hope the map helps but they are bus routes so maybe you would have to rent a bus.

HI GERVAN
Many thanks for your input of the map very much appreciated as i am sure other people
may find helpful , but in my case ,i knew the area very well like i know all districts of brum
and know my way around brum , exceedingly well .
but the fact of the matter being the city centre roads for driving on around the central city have all changed to what i can see virtualy to one way systems
with mile long dual carrige ways traffic lights every hundred yads including speed camera,s
and if yoiu wanted to turn right ,you have to travel a mile along a dual carrige way just to turn right
just like london city . one hell of a night mare
as i have travelled from worcester i don,t think i would have got a bus there to fetch aload
of computr ware in big boxes and i mean a load of boxes
if i lived in brum and was only going to wood cock street for a swim yes i would have got a bus
but any way many thanks for your in put of the map and for the forum
have your self a nice day best wishes Astonian;;;;

A lot of the small streets have disappeared in this area Park st has been extended Jennens Lane is now a Duel Carriage way that goes all the way to Dartmouth Circus Masshouse lane has gone and Appartements have now been built on the graveyard that used to be there (what i remember of the graveyard in had some very grand graves surrounded by iron railings) Not sure i,d want to live in one of them. hI DEK
Yes I found that out for myself the other day when i tryed to get to woodcock street
and i went down and around park street a couple of times how it as changed indeed
and i remember the church yard and the big grave stones with the railing around them
i remember the park keeper horris used to be a gaoler at digbeth police station
many years ago when he retired he always used to ride through on his old hercules green police bike
especialy on sunday morning when i used to visit my grand parents at new cannal sl coffee shop
i would walk up the hill with there dog and cut through there and back down the other end of new cannal st ;
to the bottom and turn left at the lights where there used to be an old pub
and back passin the barking dogs and the hide and skin and back into the shop and then nan would give me
afew penies to play on the penny fruit machine whilst serving customers
then she would walk me up to the crooked alley way and made sure i was on the thirty nine bus
by old greys shop across the rd from the jacy picture house and i would get of either aston cross or the top
of park rd and glance across at ansells watching the beer bottles go around
and then run down upper thomas st and they was cobbled then in those days
but like you said as i was trying to find my away around on the circuit i had my memory of the shop and the grave yard in my head and i started to mention it to my son of my young days as a lad
best wishes Astonian ;;;
