Jelfs John Ernest

Lesley62

Brummie babby
Hi,

this is my first post, so I hope I'm in the right area. I have been looking for the parents of John Ernest Jelfs born 1886 in Aston Birmingham. Married Elsie May Morton in 1907, on 1911 census was living in Yardley, in 1913 went to America and died 4 July 1916 in Stark Ohio. On the ship details he had a brother Samuel and I think his father maybe a Samuel too.

If anyone knows of this family , I would be so grateful of any information.

many thanks

Re: John Ernest Jelfs

It looks like they're living at 69 Cattell Road, Aston in 1891. John E aged 4, father Samuel Jelfs aged 49, born Kings Norton, mother Emalar aged 44, born Birmingham, and 2 brothers and 3 sisters including Samuel aged 18.

In 1881 they're living in Heath Mill Lane, Samuel listed as being born in Kings Heath and wife is listed (rightly probably) as Emily.

Re: John Ernest Jelfs

Samuel Jelfs married Emler (that's how it's listed on familysearch) Kempson 20th November 1865 St Jude, Bham. Registered Dec qtr 1865 wife listed as Ember but looking at the scan on freebmd that looks like a mistake and should be Emler also.

Re: John Ernest Jelfs

Thank you ever so much, hopefully I will be able to look into the family more. My mother in law who is her 80s never knew much of the Jelfs, so I hope this might help her. Many thanks again.

Re: John Ernest Jelfs

Emma Kempson born Birmingham 1847 but she appears to have been called Emily by her family in all census entries.She died as Emily Jelfs in 1907.

Re: John Ernest Jelfs

In 1861 Samuel Jelfs appears to be living with his widowed father Joseph 73 born Wooten Wawen and brother David in Kings Heath.

In 1841 Joseph is living in Kings Norton with his wife Mary and some children, listed as Jelphs.

Re: John Ernest Jelfs

Samuel jelf was a farmer and he had a couple of kids and one was a daughter whom at the age of 15 years old came to brum on the night of the censors
and she was the mother of george she came to balsall heath visting it was the d behind belgrave rd it was a big house
and the relatives there was diary makers but as time went on there bussiness was a flop and ended up poor
butt george mom maria ; was left money years later by her mother and father which in turn was left later years to george by his mother maria ;
there was a john jelf within the family of jelfs i also have a letter written to me by george jelf [ that being the one being burryed on wednesday ;
at lodge hill cemetry which he gave me names of the family on his side ;with in the letter which i have kept for years now in my box along with births and deaths and of wills of all the jelfs virtualy from start to finish as i have said my mom was the only child to bertha victoria hinton and her father ernest jelf
whom was a brother to them of ernest and the rest of the jelfs [ which was george junior ; henry ; charles ;henry arther william john ernest and ivy ;
the later part of the family oriniate from worc; and further back down the line ; way back to 1600s and upwards
born in aston was what i call young george of today whom as died was born in aston ; along with ernie ; and ivy and bil; young william
my mother naned her first child as john i will check is birth certif ; which i have ;but he died at two years old ;
i beleive she took is name from the john jelf whom at some point died i will go through my docments to give you his date of death
of the johm you are on about ; please excuse me at this time of day i have just got up and made a cup of tea and turned on my life line
which i mean of course our great site and a great bunch of people i call my family with out this site and its members i would not survive its my life line ;
but at some point today i will go into my archives ; there is a little more i have to track myself on the jelfs but as i am tapping i have heard of an emily
and also of alice whom i think does play a part some where along the line but at the end of the day they go back centrys you can also learn more if you tap into google as well as there are things about the jels which i have not put about the jelfs and also look into the central libary you will find things there that will amaze you about the secrets of jelfs to the ordinary folks of yester years way back in the war years and befiore that in the 1800s and before
the ordinary folk only seen the little tea shop around brum but what went on behind there shops and lifes was another story the out side public never knew
and the strange thing was they never really spoke to each other but they all lived less than a mile apart from each other even when the older generation
when living in worcestershire there house was less than 100 yards apart ; the same there but when george senior moved from there but still kept the thatch cotttage was they started to move into aston ; and this thatched cottage was handed to them by an aunt which could have been an emily and was kept right up until the 1950 until my grand father broke my mothers heart by selling it to an out sider of the jelfs family but he only done this but the main woman behind the bussiness was bertha victoria hinto whom died in 1953 so he had a free hand along with his fancy companion to hel him along with his extravint life style ;
but bear with me i will get the boxes out today to cross check these people theres that many people involved to think off the top of my head
is just impossible at this moment ;i am hopin agaist all the odds that onwednesday there will be some distant jelf whomwill come out of the wood work
whom i can talk to and get more info; the only other jelf member i have ever met is a lady whom is a member of this site is jayne whom is a cousin to me
and she showed me pictures of some thing ; which i hope to receive from her as promised but there are peple on ther i never knew but there house ;
of georges family and the senor one could see the wealth of what they was made of there gardens was like a foot ball pitch in size alone
and with a huge fountain must be at least ten foot tall to be honest i reckon it would have matched up to the size of the one out side the birmingham art gallery ; when george seniot came to tyburn rd way back in the late tentys from worcester he had the shop and house built and called it ivydene
and when he had it built he brought a special brick and in bedded it at the bottom of the foundationof the shop at the end of the day in the nintrys
some person removed that brick which was from his local brick maker in honeybourne which we are talking 1800s and wrapped it up in a special type of paper and took it away iwould dearly like to know where that brick is from i was luckily because i went into the ground of that property and found a special stone my self which i have in my garden ;
hi guys i have got to get my cup of tea refilled now but i will cross chec emily out because it does ring bells the name best wishes Astonian;;
