Re: William and elsie jelf

Alan, the latest census available is 1911, perhaps someone can help with the electoral roll for 1939.

Re: William and elsie jelf

Hi Astonian, I don't have access to the Electoral Rolls but in Kelly's Directory for 1940, there is a William Jelf, coffee rooms listed and it was on the corner of Villiers Street, with a Congregational Church on the opposite side of the road. It looks to be the Foundry Road/Lodge Road end.
EDIT, just looked on googlemaps, the building is no longer there nor the Church ( I believe that is a car park now)
In 1940 next door to 214 was the C of E Temperance Society Mission House, which is still there.
Hope this helps a bit

all his other brothers whom had and owned at thesame time in there life span a couple each ; and he apparently moved around the brum
and i think she said that this lady was of a jewish national origin ; because her name was goldby ; and i beleive it to be
a jewish nme ; [ well personaly i think it is i may be wrong ] any way many thanks again suzanne for your time and help ;

Re: William and elsie jelf

William Jelf was listed at Loveday Street 1935-1955, apart from in 1950 when Dennis and Marjorie Jelf (nee Parry) were listed there.
William and Elsie were also listed at 140 High Street Aston,which was next but one to the Barton Arms, from 1930-1939.
William,Elsie and Dennis Jelf were then listed at 27 Woodlands Farm Road,Bromford 1947-1960 with Raymond Jelf listed there in 1955.
Marjorie Jelf was listed with the Parry family at 37 College Rd,Erdington in 1955.
Have a good day Astonian!

Re: William and elsie jelf

Hi Astonian, The Birth records match with ladylinda's findings, although Elsie's surname has been transcribed differently at times.

Marriage: William Jelf to Elsie M Goldbey, 1923, 3rd quarter, Aston, Volume 6d 1138

Births:
William, 1924, 3rd quarter, Aston, Vol 6d Page 642. Mother, Goldby
Dennis, 1927, 3rd quarter, Birmingham N, Vol 6d Page 842, Mother Goldley
Raymond, 1934, 2nd quarter, Birmingham, Vol 6d Page 788, Mother, Goldby

Re: William and elsie jelf

HI LINDY ;
Many thanks for the further information you have give me on what you have traced
we have william 1924 along side as mother goldby
so do i take it that she is the maried wife in her maiden name as taking his name as william jelf
and the other members of sibbling are her children ; at birth given her name to the children as golby ,s
so at ome time they the children changed there names to there father and became jelfs
so do you know whom williams mother was ;if thats not putting any strain on you ;
if its not possible to know not to worry all i can say a very big thank you to you ; for your hard and valuble time
in helping me to find out about the brother i never knew he had ; [ thats my grand fathers brother ]
best wishes and thanks a million alan astonian;;

Re: William and elsie jelf

Hi Astonian,

Sorry if the way I wrote the post caused some confusion.
The Birth records were recorded with the childrens mothers maiden name included from around 1911, which is why I included the Goldby/Goldley names.
The names werent always transcribed properly, mistakes were made but I firmly believe the Goldbey/Goldby and Goldley variations are really all the same person (as in Elsie Jelf nee Goldbey) and that all 3 boys were the children of William and Elsie Jelf.

So William Jelf 1924, Dennis Jelf 1927 and Raymond Jelf 1934 were all the children born to William and Elsie M JELF who married in1923.

Ladylindas Electoral roll information at post #7 shows Dennis and Raymond Jelf with parents William and Elsie but no son William.
I have just checked the Death Records and sadly it looks as if son William didnt survive long as there is a death recorded in the same quarter for a William Jelf aged 0. 3rd quarter, Aston, Vol 6d Page 273
