Jelf Arthur Charles

Brummie babby
Hi

I have an Arthur Charles Jelf (b. 1916 in Sparkbrook, Aston). His father was also called Arthur Charles Jelf (b.1883). I know he had a sister called Ivy May Jelf. Their father was Thomas Jelf (b 1848). I have not researched much down this line, but having read a lot of Astonians posts, I'm wondering whether there may be a connection. I'm guessing there is a link.

Could anyone give me any clues?

Thanks

Nick

Re: Arthur Charles Jelf

HI NICK
Yes there is a big family connection and taking it off the top of my head
with out digging my records out thomas lived in an house
in sandy lane aston around that period and h had lodgers as well
and if i am correctly the houses was behind my aunty,s house
park street , she lived at no 10 ,park street her named was
marsden ,and thomas the father of Arther charles lived directly behind
the houses in sandy lane .
and the reason i know that is when i visited aunt ede and uncle frank
whom was from wiganand worked at Ansells as a drayman from arriving
in birmingham right up until the day he died
they had a tea room around on the lichfield rd yards from the house
i have accumelated alot of the generations of the jelfs
Births , deaths and Wills in my collections
Arther Was the start of the tea rooms brigade one of them left a large
of wealth to Arthers grand son which i will not devoldge
keith i look foreward to hearing some more from you
i will await your reply with debated breath
have a nice day best wishes astonian ;;

Re: Arthur Charles Jelf

Hi Astonian

I guessed I would get a reply from you, especially given what I have read on here. I am in fact a descendant of Arthur Charles Jelf (b. 1916. I'm his grandson). He died in 1994 whilst I was at University.

Many thanks for your reply. I have gathered there is a bit of intrigue amongst this family from reading your posts.

All I have is my grandfather, my great grandfather Arthur Charles Jelf (Senior), married Rose Marie Lunt died in 1952 and I think was born in 1883 to Thomas Jelf and Mary. I know Arthur Charles Jelf (Snr) had 3 siblings, Ivy May, my great grandfather Arthur and Leslie (b.1920).

I would definitely like to know more on the Jelfs. I have fond memories of staying over at my grandparents many years ago.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Re: Arthur Charles Jelf

Hi Astonian

I only put South Midlands as a general area given the intrigue on the Jelf family.

My grandfather lived in Yardley Wood when I was growing up at Sandmere Road. He married Doris Louisa Thomas in St Pauls Church, Balsall Heath on 5 Jul 1941. My grandmother died in 1996. She was born in Beoley, Worcs. So that's where my link to the Jelf family starts. I also know my grandfather was part of a Lodge but for the life of me cannot remember where or what Lodge.

I gathered from other posts you were writing a book. As it sounds as though we are related I would like to get hold of a copy when you finish it.

I was at Portsmouth Uni. In fact I started my family tree research just before I started in 1992 and have gradually made progress, mostly on other lines. I didn't find much on the Jelf line to start with until Dec 2005 when I purchased a Your Family Tree magazine and have been dipping in and out ever since (when I get a chance that is).

Am I right that Arthur Charles had 1 brother Leslie (18 Oct 1920) and 1 sister Ivy May Jelf (do not know when she was born, is this the same Gladys Ivy May Jelf on here in another post?). Arthur Charles (Snr) married Rose Marie Lunt (b. 4 Jan 1891, d. 1 Mar 1973).

Thomas married Mary (don't know he maiden name at the moment). I think she was born 1845 in Kingswood. I have Thomas on the 1901 census with 5 children, Arthur Charles (b.1883), William H (b.1872), Alfred (b.1877), Albert (b.1885) and Ada (b.1878).

Do these ring bells with your research so far?

Nick

Re: Arthur Charles Jelf

Hi Astonian

Looking further into this, I think there is your Jelf family with an Arthur and the one I have with Thomas and his son Arthur.

The 1901 census gives your Arthur as being 8 years old and mine gives him as being 18 years old, with Arthur(yours) in William Henry Street and mine at Sandy Lane as you mentioned.

In your first post, you said there was a coffee shop yards from your Aunt Ede and Uncle Frank. Was this one of your Jelf's coffee shops?

How does Thomas Jelf fit into your tree? He must have been a brother of William's (Mary Ann Jelf nee Hughes husband) at a guess.

Look forward to hearing from you

Re: Arthur Charles Jelf

HI DEK ;
Many many thanks for the pics; i was estatic when i seen the pic ; i am going to down load it and show the rest of my brothers
what a topic for this evening; i still have alot of un answered questions regarding certain members of the family
but yes lichfield rd was of thomas and my jelf family arpund the corner from park st where auntie lived at number ten
we lived along the rd at this moment in time i need time to settle my nerves and as i am racing agaist time i have to go out dek but i promise you i wil contact shortly in a couple of days if not tommorrow but there was a big rift between ivy and ernie o9ver this particular shop on lichfield rd and of course our old friend harold lloyed the cobbler whom his shoe sop was about a hundred yards from the coffee shop
and i beleive ivy short canged ernie my grand father over that particular one ; and they never spoke to each other in over forty years
the people in the door way on your pic looks like it was my mother but most definately my father as heworked the all the shops of the jelfs family before and after marring my mother the only child i wil have to close for now dek but rest assured i will give you the answers
about mary ann hughes
best wishes alan ; astonian

Re: Arthur Charles Jelf

hi dek; just breifly
thomas was mary ann hughes brother he went to ireland when he was three years old and at some point came back to england
and and the one on the corner of rocky lane aston cross was also Arthers tea rooms as well as the one along the aston rd north facing the picture house
and thomas had one yards from him as well but it was thomas whom was on the aston rd north first whilst arher had park st as well
and there shops was on aston rd north and the jelfs provisions ware house backed on to there shops in and around park lane
and mary ann hughes jelf lived with all the jelfs family from day one right up until she died in 1946
before her marrige she lived with her mother and two sisters in a big house and according to the records from central libary and a leading libarian there said it was a big house and they was kept women no men in the house and he said they had to be kept women as it was a big house
so there fre going with the restof the info; i have it had to be a certain jelf having an affair mom did say that her grand father
did get married again he either got devorced or she died and he marriedmary ann hughes

Re: Arthur Charles Jelf

HI NICK
In your request as to where you great grand fathers lodge was it was in aston birmingham 6
and all the jelfs family going back manny many years far back as it started was the grand masters of this society
the generation of the jelfs go back to the 1600s right through until the late forties ;
thomas and your grt grand father and rose lunt got married in brettonfod honeyborne church which was st lenoards
should you go down to honeybourne the old village now it was called cow honeybourne in those days wher they had the lands
and market gardenings there is stll some generation of the jelfs still workng but he old church is now convered into some kind of old aparments and people still live in there but the grounds are still there along with the graves and all the generation of the jelfs are burried there if you check with any records f the central libary or worcestershire history centre you will see them all ven here little cottage that are still there and the fleeece pb with its history is still as busy a ever i go there quite alot as i livein worcestershire my self
all the older geneation ofthe jelfs was born and bred and live there before war years and the air fields still there but with little barn type building on it now but getting back to the jelfs thomas and all the family members are all burried there and got married there even one of of our
uncle raymond moved down to he very church to get married there before he moved to oxford he his a big counciller and goverment officier
if you log into google and punch in to google his name his profile will come up and georgeie jelf himself is there and he his in his ninetyis now still alive on how his life in the public life he became but all the jelfs got married in honeyborne and the jelfs contribution to form the church in the late 1800s to early 1900s was removed to the abbey at eversham and put in there vaults
thomas lived in sandy lane with rather a big house with a lady lodger the shop was around the corner as i have said that was on the lichfield rd
and it was keptt in the family of jelfs up until around the mid 50s when ernie sold it off to another family member he told my mother whom was his only daughter and i lived just about three hundred yards from it on the opersite side but as years went on it came to light he sold it to miss ivy jelf but never paid and that caused a big fued betwen them also thomas had anoth one on the go along the lichfield rd aston rd north at aston cross
in fact he had three shops one on the corner of rocky lane and it was a big one and a smaller one abit furthe along the rd on the aston rd as i have said when he died arther took over then george took over them at the end of the day ernie took the lot raymonds dad william ; [ billy ]
only ever tryed the bussines after george and sold it to ernie whom accumilalated them around the aston and the city centre as well
i could go on but i will stop now and save space on the network for the others just to mention raymond told me that he tried to get into the society but it was all closed down by the time he was older enough but our great great grand fatherscame from glocestershire and oxford
and the boundries moved and it became eversham it was a place called sandilands in gloc , many many years ago ; best wishes astonian
