Jefferies Ada

rowan

Born a Brummie
Ada Jefferies was widowed and left for Canada in the 1920's.

Her husband was known as Jack and they lived in Birmingham.

I have found an Ada Jefferies arriving in Quebec Canada in 1929 but how can I be sure that she is the one I am looking for?

Ada took her 6 (?) children with her. Is there any way of finding if she is mine?......... please:)

Canadian entry

Hi Rowan :) "your" maybe Ada Jeffries emigrating with 6 children to
Quebec in 1929 must have been A/quite rich ? B/Very brave,
perhaps the lovely & very knowledgeable Canadian cousins we are
honoured to share with on this site may be able to assist you on this,

Quebec at that time i would image would have been even more "French"
than they are today so a New land & language for a lone Woman + 6
would be quite a remarkable acheivement :)
Maybe best to check prior Hubby Jack,s date of death & the
Childrens ages, maybe Ada embarked with New man? & married
over there? Electoral Rolls is way to go up until Jacks death then
Embarkations/Ships-passenger lists & Others hopefully will advise,
Good Luck,, John Y

Thank you John for your reply.

Yes Ada was a very brave woman indeed. I beleive she finally settled in Toronto.

She was by no means a rich woman (coming from the Nechalls/Aston area)

A distant cousin was believed to have written to the family until about 20years ago and then it stopped.........shame:cry:

This is on my husbands side of the family so I'll have to delve more into
things such as marriage ect.

But thank you again John :)

Rowan I looked at the manifests for passengers leaving England, there was only one Ada Jefferies that was 1929 and her last address was 9 Freemantle Place Cotham Bristol. I'll have another look tomorrow:)

I had another search, Rowan and nothing else comes up. Findmypast who have transcribed the departures from England, say they have now completed all the records. On the manifest there are no children with her, do you think she had relatives in Bristol and went there to leave the children until she sent for them.

Thank you again Di for your time.

I have learnt today that Ada went with her 9........ yes 9 children to

Canada where she was to be met by her sister who lived there. the sister

never appeared and Ada had to find refuge in a Salvation Army Hostel,

how sad is that :(

I can't find a marriage between Ada and JOHN (JACK) Jefferies on freeBMD

John's (Jack's) sister was also Ada Jefferies!! (b.1876) who married James Latchford in 1897 in Aston.

I don't know when John/Jack was born. I can't find them on the 1881 census.

Rowan

I have just found out that it is JEFFRIES and not Jefferies!!:P
(it's the way they pronounced the name or my hearing)

ADA MARY LOCK m JOHN WILLIAM JEFFRIES Dec 1891

Now..........after 9 children John dies (hardly surprising I suppose!!) but when and where is now the question???

Maybe

Hi Rowan :) This is a "possible" death for John W Jeffries age 43
died/registered Aston 6d page 312 Oct/Nov/Dec Quarter 1911,
This 20 years after his marriage + 9 children,,
Maybe the one you want but re-check,, everything ok.
Cheers John Y

Rowan, do you know the names of any of Ada's children? There is an Ada Jeffries on a ship in 1913, she has 4 children with her, and another possibly is hers. They do match up to the names below.

I think this is John and Ada in 1901
Name:John W Jeffries Age:31

Relation:Head
Spouse's Name:Ada Mary

John Jefferies 3
Ada Mary Jeffries 30

Ada age 42 Housewife
John 16 Farming
Ada 11 School

Annie is listed next but one to the family. Being 19 I guess she was recorded on her own.

Births which may be worth investigating.

Arthur JEFFRIES registered Aston June 1903 ref. 6d 220

Dorothy Isobel JEFFRIES registered Aston Dec 1906 ref. 6d 243

If you check for the births of the children that are listed on 1901 census they are all registered JEFFRIES.

Di, many thanks for your help. I will try and nudge a few names to the cousin and see if your findings are the right family.

Looks promising............ I hope ;)
Thanks again Di.

Alberta, many thanks for your help.

I will investigate the births to see if any correspond with names that the cousin can recall.

Hope so.......because I maybe able to trace descendents who are still in Canada

Then all will be revealed :D

Di & Alberta, you are bang on with what you have found:0422::433:

The cousin recalls having written to Dorothy Isabel at the address below but contact was lost about 15-20 years ago

The last known address of DOROTHY nee JEFFRIES was

161 COURCETTE ROAD,
TORONTO,
ONTARIO, CANADA.

I don't quite know where to go from here now. :( Maybe our Canadian family can suggest something to point me in the right direction please

Thank you loads, you are both so kind to help.
