Jarrett, King's Heath

Blodwen

Brummie babby
Hello,
I'm looking for information on the Jarrett family. John Owen Jarrett was an ironmonger who came to Birmingham from North Wales in about 1880. He married Emmeline Mary Chambers and they had eight children. My great grandfather Bertie Owen was born in 1885 and was killed in WW1 in 1917. All but one of the six sons had the middle name Owen, but after the death of Bertie's widow in 1922, all contact with the Jarrett family appears to have been lost. The last address I have is Addison Road, King's Heath in 1924.

Thanks

Hi

I think that we may be related, my great grandfather was Steven Henry Jarrett and I think he was brother to Bertie Owen Jarrett - as he named one of his sons Bertie Owen Jarrett., the other Lancelot Owen and he also had three daughters. I am about to start researching my family tree and have found a lot of information about my Great grandmother and her family go back several generations, but I have no information on my great grandfather.

Please could you contact me if you have any information. Steven Henry Jarrett simply went to war in 1917 and did not return to the family, he occasionally turned up - I suspect that he had another family.

Thanks

Mary Gandy (Bruckshaw-Jarrett)

When I first saw the name Jarrett, I made the connection to a neighbour of my parents and me as a child, this connection shows above as 12, Livingstone Road, Kings Heath, Lily lived there until the late 50's/early 60's
Number 12 appears in two photos on my website https://www.bhamb14.co.uk/index_files/INTRODUCTION.htm (lower picture left hand side)

My first job after leaving school was as a lab technician in the Chemistry Dept of Birmingham University. There was a Len Jarrett working in the stores - his initials were L O Jarrett. I wonder if he could have been the Lancelot Owen Jarrett mentioned above. He was quite a character.

I think it probably was Lancelot. Apparently, he hated his rather grand name and was known as Len. Thank you for this, i'll pass it on to Len's nephew.

The reason I remeber his initials is that we used to call him Len Oswald Jarrett, and he'd just laugh. I had no idea that his real first name was Lancelot! He was also a very good mimic and would phone people on the internal system impersonating the voices of some of the high-up academic staff. Maybe we were all bonkers in those days...

Is he still with us?

Hello Mary,
I've sent you a message with more information about Stephen Henry. He was Bertie's oldest brother and did survive WW1 and died in the thirties. Please message me if you'd like more information. Been a while since I have been on here!

Unfortunately Lancelot is no longer with us, he sounded a right character but I'll pass on your comments to his nephew. I think he ended up in Hampshire but am not sure. I have a box of stuff in the corner of the room that needs sorting- a lottery win or early retirement is needed, the former is more likely in this day and age!

Hi Mary - my grandfather was also Stephen Henry Jarrett - my mother was Gwendoline Mary Owen Griffiths nee Jarrett. Like you, we often wondered if there was another family!! It must be you!! Stephen Henry Jarrett occasionally came home and it seemed another baby was born. No one in the family knows much about him but a picture is gradually building up. Perhaps between us we could gather a bit more information? John G

Mary,
I do hope you get this. My Grandfather was Steven Henry Jarrett, My Father was Bertie Owen Jarrett. So we are related. I can tell you so much about the family I do hope you reply, although it's been a long time since you posted.

It was my Dad who ended up in Hampshire, Bertie Owen Jarrett, Lance lived in Birmingham until he died - he had 8 children. Wonderful man I can still see him now, in the garden of our house at 58 Southam Road, Hall Green!

Thanks for contacting us Mick. It's a long time since I visited this site and have sadly given up on any news from Mary. Blodwen is the girl to contact if you need any documented evidence for the Jarretts. She has been so helpful and methodical in all her research. It's the little bits and pieces of personal memories though that bring it all to life. She may have some more information on Stephen Henry as I think she has contacted Mary but may not have got very far - it's worth a go. All good wishes Ann G (John)

I'm afraid Mary (gandy) is a lapsed member, she had not visited the forum for over 3 years and so her details are removed from the membership list by the forum robot, it also means she would not have received any notifications of these latest posts.
