Hi, I'm new to the group.

Looking for information on above, James Williams Newman was a Confectioner/Baker at 31 Fleet Street, not sure if that was his home or business. Anyone have ideas on this? The census for 1881 lists the family there, but would the business also be there?

Thanks

geniemom, Welcome to our brilliant site, I'm sure someone can help.
In the meantime I went to the LDS site 1881 cen' and looked at the previous houses. If you skip the court address' (Which are houses at the back of the main address numbers 'Back to Back' houses around a court yard) and go just on the main numbers there are a few trade people in the street.
To me this would suggest that there may be a group of shops. So maybe a Confectioner/Baker shop at
No 31 Fleet Street
No 30 Gun Dealer Chandler
No 29 Shopkeeper
No 28 Coal Agent
No 27 Saddler
No 26 Tailor

This is just my way of deducing you understand. Someone with access to 1880 -1883 Kelly's may be able to confirm this for you.

Thanks for that great list of shops. So, I'm wondering if they all lived above their shops or somewhere else. Any ideas? Was this common in the mid to late 1800's? I do have multiple address the family was at according to their childrens birth certificates. So I know they moved around abit, but still trying to understand the way things were done back then.
