Hi,
I wonder if anyone can help My Dad worked as a van lad with a horse and cart from the age of 9 at J T Powell and Sons Bakeries, Shipway Rd, Hay Mills. And we'd love any information anyone might have on them
Thanks

John Thomas Powell started his own bakery business at 25 Coventry road, Hay mills betweenn 1896 and 1898. The road was later renumbered and shop was then 1034 Coventry road, but I'm fairly sure it was the same position. By 1932 it was J.T.Powell & Son , and between 1932 and 1935 a separate bakery was built at 5 Shipway Road, which is just round the corner. Between 1950 and 1955 they seem to have been taken over by Procea Products, who then own the bakery in Shipway Road, which is still open in 1963, but seems to have been closed by 1964. In 1955 onwards the Coventry road shop is a George Mason grocers. Procea made one of those revolting slimming breads that were like eating tasteless sawdust.

Due to progress Shipway Rd does not have a corner with Coventry Rd, Berkeley Rd took a piece of Shipway Rd and now both corners are Coventry Rd/Berkeley Rd & Shipway Rd is shorter than it was when Powells Bakery was there. Len.

What years was your father working for them? Powell's used to supply my mothers shop in the late forties, early fifties.

Hi Nick
Dad started work as a van lad aged 9yrs old in 1944 and was a van lad till 1950 and the had his own round until 1953 when he left to national service.

Hi,
I know this thread is 4 years out of date - but - J T Powell was my step father's grandfather. I came across a photo of all the vans lined up in Shipway Road around 1930 for May day. I've scanned it in and can email it to you if you're interested.

Regards,
Alan
