I have a copy of the birth certificate of my Great Great Grandfather Isaac Holloway, son of Isaac and Elizabeth Holloway, baptised on January 1st 1834 at St. Martins. Certificate No. 3865

His father Isaac's Trade - Caster
Abode - Bradford Street

I would very much like to trace the line back further but don't know how to go about it. Any help, advice, information would be very gratefully received.

Regards,

Sheryl

The certificate is his baptism certificate
Birth certificates were not issued until 1837 when registration became compulsory.

Isaac was most probably born in 1830 if his age is correct on the 1841 census(although this is notorious for adding or taking away a few years)this would mean he was baptised at age 4.

Northumberland Street,Parish of Aston.
Isaac Holloway age 50 Brass caster
Elizabeth age 50
Sarah age 19
Isaac age 11
all born in the county.

Thank you so much Alberta the information is a great help and yes Isaac (the son) was indeed born in 1830 according to the details on the certificate. So I see he had a sister Sarah, we didn't know about. I'm very grateful to you.

Can you offer any advice on how best to trace the line back further?

Regards,
Sheryl

I don't know how to thank you this is such wonderful information. I can't wait to pass it on to the rest of the family. You're a star!

According to the National Trust, the surname Holloway was derived from the geographical location, as distinct from trade or personal name. Concentrations of Holloways were as follows in 1881:
Most Dudley
Then Worc
Then Birmingham
Few Glouc

I am researching Holloways, too, though an entirely different branch.
You might also try searching the IGI for pre 1837 family members. Good luck with your search, Sheryl.

Thanks for the info, very much appreciated, I'll start exploring the IGI site in earnest tomorrow.

My Holloways, left England for India at some point, returning in 1947 when India gained independence. How and why they left the Uk I don't know. It seems our line has come full circle. I'm amazed to discover that while I was in Birmingham at the new Bullring just a few months ago, standing just outside Selfridges and marvelling at the little island of history that is St Martins, that my own ancestors were baptised on that very site.

Find My Past should have the outgoing passenger lists. In theory at least, Ancestry should have the incoming, not that I ever found my Grandfather's return despite hours of searching. Once you know the ship you could search for a picture on the web. There is a lot of nostalgia attached to ships, but be aware that newer ships were / are often given the name of older ships.

My parent's came back on the Asturias, so I guess that's a start. Thanks again you've been very helpful. Wish I had something to offer in return but I'm a novice as far as genealogy is concerned at the moment.
