hi folks been sent this photo caption reads...pub in aston which would seem obvious to some as it says ansells aston on the wall but it just does not look right to me...ansells pubs were not exclusive to birmingham so my gut feeling it is not an aston pub..having said that aston would have looked so very different when this photo was taken..it may not even be a pub could be just advertising ansells..i think this is one you either know or dont..no clues as far as i can see but maybe a park in the background...either way its a nice photo...ansells pub.jpg

I would also say that there is a pool or river behind the railings at the other side of the pub, and probably a road between the pub and the railings

yes mike i thought that as well..hard to be certain...this one could keep us guessing for ages

Early picture of the old Aston and what springs to my mind is 1920,/30s
And the water scene behind the buildings which is a lake or canal
That was running down and across the Aston reader, and the channel coming from Tyburn road
Along the factory buildings and property's that ran along Lichfield road on the right hand side of Lichfield road
Aston after passing Holborn hill just passing Aston station and cuckoo bridge Aston
As I seem to recall way back in time of seeing a scene similar of water behind the building
At one time in the fortys as walking passing and on the tram there was a side view of a feature
Of water with bit of railings and some section of brick wall along from it
As a kid I thought all those years back seeing it as it was then I thought of some side ng of a wharf
I know at the top end by Tyburn road and the junction of the bridge where the old tram turn table was there was a canal and the sand Pitts and and a bargee wharf
That's why I think its is an Aston Inn the era
I have got a lot of pictures and post cards of old pubs and in books
Later this evening I will get them out and search for it but I cannot help thinking
This one was on the forum about ten years ago
Best wishes Alan,,, Astonian,,,,

all the best

Hi,

From memory, wasn't the expression Ansells Aston Ales just a trademark of the company?

Kind regards
Dave

As Dave says, and you have already stated Ansells Aston Ales were not exclusive to Aston or in fact Birmingham as this old photo of The Coach & Horses Castle Bromwich demonstrates. I think the only way that this pub will be traced is by someone's personal memory of it or another copy of the photo complete with name is found.

I came across that photo on eBay. It's actually a photograph for sale and selling at £25! The seller suggested it's Brum at Aston but it's obviously not. My first reaction was its out over the Lickey's way. But just gut feeling.
