India General Service Medal

Dashers

master brummie
After much searching I have finally found my Gt Grandfathers Military service record, it took me a while mainly because the recollection was that he was injured in the Boer War (shot in the hand)

I actually discovered that he was in fact shot in the left forearm in Burma and was with the Leicestershire Regiment.

His service record entitled him to "Medal and Clasp Burma 1885-89" - intimates a single clasp

I take this to be the "India General Service Medal" with the "Burma" clasp. On trying to research this I see that there are two clasps (1) Burma 1885-87 and (2) Burma 1887-89.

Could any 'medal expert' confirm that the most likely meaning of "Medal and Clasp Burma 1885-89" would in fact be the "India General Service Medal" with both clasps.

I can confirm that he was in 'East India' from 4 Mar 1884 - 12 Mar 1889

I doubt whether I could get the actual medal as it was probably issued, sold, lost, stolen, handed down but I suppose I could get a copy from a collector or dealer.

Now to discover more about the regiment and campaign, I am well chuffed with this find as it has been nagging in my head for a few years

As an adendum I see that he transferred from the Leicestershire Regiment to the "Royal xxxxxx Fusiliers", I cannot fathom what the missing word is. It could be Warwickshire as that is the most obvious but I am not convinced (and I don't think they were in Burma). In the attached extract the word is in two places (1) showing he transferred on 31 January 1882 and then (2) in the margin. The 1st letter looks like an 'M' and the only regiment I could find was Royal Madras Fusiliers (who were Irish and he was not) but that is clutching at straws, any ideas?

Thanks for the link Colin, I'll take a look and be careful

Nice one Suzanne, the reg number ties in with the rest of the data that goes with the page I posted

Now I have to find out why he transferred to an Irish regiment

Really appreciate your effort
