Charles Humpage was born about 1791, he is my 3 x gr. grandfather. He was married to Matilda. We have just found them and their family on the 1841 and 1851 census living and working at Moor Green Mill, Kings Norton. I have just applied for Charles's death cert. from 1854.
On the 1851 census their grand son, also William, is shown living with them aged 11. He was born in Houndsditch, in the City of London and on the 1851 census his mother shows him as living with her too. A bit of a puzzle?!At the time the census was taken her husband was in the debtors prison.
I would love to hear from anyone who is researching the same Humpage family.
Best wishes,
Shirley

Hi Shirley,

Charles Humpage married Matilda Lynall
26th June 1809 Edgbaston

Matilda Lynall baptised 2nd August 1790,St. Martins Birmingham
parents John and Elizabeth.

There is a Charles Humpage baptised 3rd February 1782 Maxstoke, that is the only one I found. His death certificate should have the correct age on it.

These are all extracted records from the originals by LDS.

Re: Charles Humpage

Humpage: Seem to remember a Humpage built a substantial building in the City Centre in Victorian times. There was another who had a seedsman shop on the corner of Balsall Heath Road and Mary Street, Balsall Heath. I have a picture but have absolutely no idea how to post it - it is not at all obvious.

Re: Charles Humpage

Hi, thank you all so much for the info. All very interesting to read especially as we had no idea of the surname of the Matilda that Charles Humpage married - another step forward!
I now eagerly await his death cert. which should arrive in the next couple of days.
I don't know the Birmingham area very well. Used to belong to the BC Rootsweb list and made a couple of friends through that. I visited the Central Library a few years back and saw the original entry for my 2 x gr. grandparents (daughter of Charles) marriage which was what really got me "hooked".
I now think that I am due another visit to Brum!
Can anyone tell me, Charles died at Kings Norton in 1854 where is he likely to have been buried?
And lastly, is it true that couples sometimes "eloped" to St. Mary's, Handsworth from other places? I was told this some time back from someone on line. Charles's daughter Ann married William Wright there in November 1836.
Many, many thanks once again. So glad that I found this forum! :)
best regards,
Shirley

Re: Charles Humpage

Hi Jean,
Interesting the think that there might still be Humpages in the Kings Norton area - if there are then we are most certainly related. Thanks for passing the info. on - it's been added to my list of possible future contacts!
I note that you are researching Owen- don't suppose they spread as far as London did they?
Best regards,
Shirley
