Hi folks, I've mentioned this topic when I joined, but haven't followed up till now. I wonder if anyone can spot where I've gone wrong - or give me any info about your own experiences. I don't ask that anybody spend a lot of time on this but sometimes another pair of eyes can spot something that I have missed. So here goes - any suggestions or comments welcome:

I’m here again with my query about the Howell family that I’m researching, which I hope someone out there can help with. I’ve tried to keep it reasonably short, but also give the info that I have so far – which may or may not be right.

I’ve lost several threads along the way that make me think maybe I don’t have the right family & would be grateful if anyone can point out where I’ve gone wrong, or find the links that I can’t find – anything would be much appreciated.

To start with, my people used the name Guy in 1901, their real name was Howell but the family story is that Edward deserted from the army and they used his wife’s maiden name, but his wife’s maiden name was not Guy, it was Godson. I haven’t yet found the link to Guy.

1901 G13 1864
1 Bk 51 Tilton Road, Aston
Edward (Thomas Edward) Guy age 29 B: B’ham, Gas Stoker m 1894
Sarah (Godson) wife 27
Clarence 5 B: 6.6.1895 m: Violet East 1919
William 3 B: 7.10.1897 m: Florence Bennett 1919
Violet 9 mths. m: William Hewson
Other children born later:
Thomas Edward (Ted Guy) B: 22.8.1905 m: Ellen (?)
Ivy May b: 19.8.1909 m: (?) Grubb
Doris Winifred b: 2.4.1913

Cannot trace either (Thomas) Edward Howell or Sarah Godson in 1891 (not married then).
Cannot trace (Thomas) Edward’s parents in 1891. Haven’t found either of their deaths, so could be any time after 1881.

This obvious lack of connection causes me to doubt the following info. Also anomalies with ages, names, place of birth for wife. BUT – these are the only Edward Howell and his father, Thomas Howell, (grandfather of the first Thomas Edward mentioned) I can find, who are Pearl Button Makers.

1881 RG11 2994
14 Ct. 1 Hse, Brierly St. B’ham.
Edward Howell 33 B: B’ham Pearl Button Maker
Clara (Eliza Clara) 30 B: B’ham
Edward (Thomas Edward) 7
Elizabeth ll
Emily (or Emma) 15
Sarah Ann 5

Link to 1871: Thomas Edward birth cert: 1.4.1873: parents’ names, occupation, address.

1871 RG10 3154
Nursery Grove, Aston Manor
Edward 25 B: B’ham Pearl Button Maker M: 1865
Eliza (Eliza Clara Tookey) 23 B: Wales
Elizabeth 3
Emma (or Emily) 6

From here on, it’s even more unsure because I cannot find a birth for Edward Howell, Birmingham, with father Pearl Button Maker. 1 in Dudley, 1 in Wolverhampton, 1 in St. Neots, don’t seem to fit.
I tried Edwin (see below) – doesn’t fit parents or occupation.
I have birth cert for Edmund, 18.2.1846 – parents match, & occupation, born: 16 Ct. George St., B’ham.

1861 RG9 2161
216 Farm St., Birmingham
Thomas Howell 40 B: B’ham Pearl Button Maker
Sophia, wife, 38 B: Dublin
Alfred 18 (Brass buttons - went to Rhode Island, USA, returned by 1881)
Edmund 14 ( I think may be Edward)
Emma 24
Henry 16 Pearl Button Maker – m: 1 Maria 1864, 2 Sarah 1873
Julia 12 m: Edward Griffiths 1868
Sarah Ann 10 m: Herbert Hart 1870
Thomas 8 m: Sarah Roden 1879
Walter 6 m: Lavinia Adams 1875

1851 HO107 2058
35 Hospital Street, B’ham
Thomas Howell 33 B: B’ham Pearl Button Maker m: 1836
Sophia (Hillock) 35 B: B’ham
Alfred 10
Edwin (I think may be Edward)
Emma 14
Henry 8
Jillia (Julia) 3
Sarah 1

1841 cannot trace Thomas, Sarah or any of the children. Thomas and Sophia married 1836 at St Phillips, Birmingham, so they must have been around Birmingham at the time.

I have a christening record for a Thomas Howell, born 13 Aug. 1815, bap. 4 Oct. 1815, parents Thomas & Louisa Howell, Stafford Street, B’ham. Occupation: Gun Smith – fits with Thomas’ approx. age but may or may not be correct. Why didn’t he go into the gun trade, same as his father, which seemed to be the pattern in those days? Haven’t found any likely siblings for Thomas.

Can anybody tell me where I’ve gone wrong ……

Cheers all,
Millie

Hi Millie,
Have only recently joined this site.
Below info may help you to trace back:

Ronald Howell b.20.04.1923 B'ham
Married Catherine Laura Lorton (my father's sister) 27.08.1949 St.Andrews, Bordesley, Birmingham
I haven't any details back further as I haven't researched this part of the tree yet.
If you check out the birth cert of Ronald, it may link you to some of the ealrier Howells that you have.
Best of luck!

Further note: My family seems to have gone from gun /metalworkers to saddlers in 19th c plus there were button makers also - so don't rely too much on the occupations!
May have been 'needs must' industries at the time!!

Don't forget that button makers were often in the metal trade as they punched buttons out like the ones used on millitary uniforms etc. If you visit the Jewelley Quarter Museum they demonstrate how this was done.:)

Thanks both for your info & advice - Ill take a look & see what comes up. I'm so stuck with this lot that I'll try anything & everything to see if I can make that missing connection,

cheers,
Millie

Hi Millie

Found this one --

GRUBB Ernest H Howell Birmingham S. 6d465 Howell Ivy M Grubb Birmingham S. 6d465

She used her original surname so i would imagine her fathers name would be recorded as Howell on the cert

bren

If you have not already got this marriage cert i suggest you send for it --

1st qtr 1894
Godson Sarah Aston 6d 303
Howell Thomas Edward Aston 6d 303

It should have full names of both fathers

Thanks for this info Bren, I have the marriage cert, but not the other one for Grubb/Howell. I tried clicking on the link you gave but nothing comes up. Can you tell me where you fond this, or any other details please? I think this may be a great- aunt, from the bits of info I have so far, so would like to check it out.

Many thanks,
Millie
