My Great Grandfather, John Houghton b 1872 Alvechurch, was a reported
suicide at some date between 1901 (census) and 1910 (re-marriage of wife).
Despite extensive searching I can find no GRO record of his death under
Houghton/Haughton/Horten/Oughton/Aughton et al.
He married Solihull Sep 1892 (6d 841), his children were born
Solihull/Birmingham, his wife re-married Solihull, it seems likely that he
may have died in Solihull/Birmingham. In 1901 the family were at 62 Blackfords Rd, Sparkhill.
I have contacted both Solihull and Warwickshire Record Offices but without result.
Does anyone have any death info re John Houghton?
John Houghton's wife was Mary Ann, nee Print, also born 1872, in Kings
Norton, I assume she would have been the informant. John's Mother was
Ellen Houghton b 1851 Solihull, she did not register the name of John's
Father.

Re: John Houghton

I found a John Houghton, aged 30, who died in 1903. His death was recorded in Chorlton, Lancashire in the June Qtr of 1903. That seems to be the only one that is about the right age.

Re: John Houghton

Thanks for that.
I have a request in with the Birmingham Coroner re Inquest, if that proves negative I will try the Chorlton man, although I feel it's probably a bit early, the wife had at least 3 young kids & given the date & times would have had to re-marry sooner than 1910.

Re: John Houghton

Hi Paul

I looked through the register from the start of 1901 to the end of 1910, i noted the one in 1903 but i found these two possibles --

John Houghton 32yrs 1st qtr 1905 Upton 6c 186

John Houghton 39yrs 1st qtr 1909 Chorlton 8c 623

Do you have any idea how and where he committed suicide, perhaps a newspaper search might help, try Times Online.

Re: John Houghton

G'Day Bren

Thanks for that, I will send off for the Upton death cert, that record holds some promise.
I have looked for newspaper entries, although John was a Labourer in Victorian/Edwardian England, I doubt the family had enough money to place an obituary.
No idea at all of how, why, where etc, just a family report that he did suicide. The fact seems to have been covered up by later generations.

Cheers

Re: John Houghton

Hi Paul

Yes, the Upton one for me is the favourite if only for the age.
Having been born in Alvechurch, lived in Solihul and probably knew Kings Norton he could have known the Upton area also but i might be barking up the wrong tree, let us know what the cert says

Re: John Houghton

Hi,
Will do, I ordered the cert s'morning, they usually take a week/10 days or so to get here.
Would a suicide at Upton in 1905 be covered by the Birmingham Coroner do you think? They have records back to 1875 or so, but no index and with my 10 year span and 800 odd inquests a year, could not pinpoint the death from the inquest without a date. If I can find the inquest then I should find the where & how if not the why.
Cheers

Re: John Houghton

Hi Bren,
Thanks, I have now found Upton on the map, what confused me was that John married in 1892 at St John's Church, with the address given as Sparkhill, Yardley, Worcestershire.
Will advise re correct man etc.

Re: John Houghton

Hi Paul

Yes there are a lot of places that we now take for granted are Birmingham, it was once a small town that has swallowed so many places and is still pushing outward.
This is a good site for finding registration changes over the years --

Re: John Houghton

Hi,
Different John Houghton I feel, my man had no father listed by his mother Ellen, he was brought up by the Pearce family when his mother remarried.

Re: John Houghton

Thanks Paul
Was worth a try as they were roughly in the same area.
Most of my earlier Houghton's were from Birlingham, Worcs

Re: John Houghton

Hi,

A check, found:

1891 John HOUGHTON single 23 Boot repairer born Kingswinford Staffordshire
living 66 Bridgnorth Road, Woolaston Worcestershire
with James Loxton 25 Shoemaker and his family, wife Charlotte 26, son James R. 2

(*When I checked 1881 and 1981 census some Houghtons born in Wall Heath were down as living in Kingswinford.)

Went searching for Johns marriage to Emma on free BDM found a John Houghton and Emma Reed on same page for Jan-Mar 1892 at Stourbridge (Shropshire, Staffordhsire, West Midlands, Worcestershire)

1901 census found:

15a Bridgnorth Road, Wollaston, Worcesterhire: (*Note address compared to 1891)

John HOUGHTON 33 Coal Carter born Newtown Staffordshire
Alice 37 Brierley Hill Staffordshire
Sarah Ann 8 Brierley Hill "
Beatrice May 2 Wollaston Worcestshire
John 4mths Wollaston "

Checked free BDMs

Jul-Sep 1892 a John Houghton at Stourbridge on same page as an Alice Williams
also
Oct-Dec 1892 a John Houghton at Solihull (Warwickshire, West Midlands, Worcestshire) on same page as Alice Maude M. Cummins

Sarah Ann Houghton born Jan-Mar 1893 Stourbridge
Beatrice May Houghton born Jan-Mar 1899 Stourbridge
John Houghton born Oct-Dec 1900 Stourbridge

Also found an Emma Houghton born Apr-Jun 1894 Died Jan-Mar 1895 at Stourbridge

plus heaps of other Houghtons born in Stourbridge from 1890's up.

Have you thought of the possibility of Emma ? dying and John remarrying this Alice. Just a thought. Did not find a death of an Emma Houghton in 1892 that might match for Stourbridge or Worcestershire area.

Above from a very helpful reasearcher (Kathy) at Bundy GA

Hope it helps

Re: John Houghton

Thank you very much John.
I haven't been doing much on this part of the Houghton's for a while. I've been concentrating on the Cooper/Houghton connection. I've even met up with a 3rd cousin on that side, or should that be 2nd cousin once removed?
I'll look into the info you sent but it does seem right about Emma.

Love Chris
