Hospital Street Blitz Damage

Hi John,
Thanks for the info - much appreciated - though its not casualties that I am interested in here. A few years ago I was walking around Birmimgham looking at some old factories. Not being a Birmingham resident I took a wrong turning down Hospital Street (North) and realising my error I turned round. Looking up I saw something that startled me - a very distinctive window that I recognised as being from from the old Wright and Butler Lamp Factory that I thought had been demolished years ago. I knew I had just passed by the site as I had seen the 50's packing case factory that I believed had now totally replaced it. To cut a long story short I found that the whole rear face of the building was still intact from floor to roof -a remarkable surival! It puzzled me as to why only the rear of the building was still standing and I could only guess that it had been blitzed and maybe with shortage of materials post-war, they may have tried to re-used it as part of the new building. When I came across this website I thought this may be my chance to find out exactly what did happen all those years ago.

Bomb peckers !!!

Hi Misk,, Yes you are right on spot with your recollections :)
the Box-Carton Company manufactured there as you rightly say,
The most notable building was Brandeur,s Pen & Knib a massive
3 Storey building probably 1870,s circa build or older,
This was about a hundred yards further down New John St West
almost to junction with Summer Lane (my old haunt 1960,s )

There were quite a few "Solitary facias" left intactum after "bomb"
damage,, my father said it was to stop people "peckin" the sites,
Scavenging,, Lead pipes, copper wire & Anything get their hands on,
Also the Builders redeveloping in later years left them as Boundary
Markers etc, why knock them down if nobody going to pay them ;)
Ok, good of you to drop in & take an interest, Cheers Nottingham Misk
Best regards John Y

I believe the factory was built around 1867/8 It was known as the Bristol Lamp Works. Even though it is the rear of the building it has some very nice features especially hidden away at ground floor level - presumably the loading bay area, which I seem to recall had the original outside floor surface too. Very atmospheric when you are close up. All the windows and sills seem to be intact too, so presumably the blast came from the New John Street side . I suspect the rear 10/15 feet of the building, including the interior, is intact at all levels. I doubt there are any other surviving lamp workshops from this era anywhere in the country. Rob
