Parades of working horses go back a long way. Organisations such as railway companies and breweries would hold their own parades in celebration of the work of the animals and in promoting their proper care. By the 1930s Birmingham attempted to organise one combined Horse Parade of all existing shows for the City bringing together all the different horse parades. It took place in May each year thereafter. There were categories and prizes for entrants.
Some individual horse parades seem to have continued, despite a range of categories for horse entrants being included in the combined show’s classes.
