The Pubs on the way to Atherstone from Coleshill for the Real Ale drinkers were few and far between, off the beaten track far flung and out of the way but only about 40 years ago their was a good many to serve the travelers on the main old coach road.
One of these old pubs was one I went into about 20 years ago and liked, as the years rolled on it changed hands and became a up market what I call a “yukkie pub” and the old barn was painted out in a stupid sickly colour meals served on huge oversized plate and vastly overpriced ……the pub …..once called “The Hanging Gate” in 1824 which took its name from the hanging toll gate across the main coach road…..now known as
The Horse & Jockey at Bentley after passing The Bull at Furnace End and the Griffinat Church End …
George (Who has great local knowledge) and Julie his wife for the past few years have truly turned the Horse and Jockey pub around offering great meals at great prices which I defy anyone to beat ….for such good wholesome food…plus real Ale which is a good plus and a cracking good fire to warm the cockles of ya heart
Now going back to the history of the pub …the sign hanging outside is of a horse and jockey but it is said that the painting holds a secret and that it was once a picture of Sir William Dugdale who rode his horse Cloncarrig in the Grand National in 1952 and was painted over when all the locals lost money at the bookies… when he lost, after falling once he crossed Beecher's Brook…..
One day they perhaps will get the old paint stripped back to allow folks to see the original (if it exists)
