Hooke family

goldfinch

knowlegable brummie
According to the 1911 census, my husband's great grandfather lived in 'Stonehurst' Gravelly Lane - we can only assume this is a house name rather than a road/street. Without walking up and down staring at house fronts, is there any way to establish where this would be located? Also, how do we find out info about the family's stonemason business (Erdington) Any info on the Hooke family would be greatly appreciated! Happy New Year to you all!

stonehurst is the name of the house. found them on the electoral roll in 1912. every house had a name ... ie carlton, abingdon, cedarcliffe, dewthorpe, hatherdene, STONEHURST, holland house, inglethorpe, farlow, etc etc. stonehurst was listed as edward hooke.

Kellys Directories for around that year probably a good start.

I think theres a full set in the Central Library in Brum. Or someone on here can usually help.

Kellys (1912) doesn't list it as "Stonehouse" but as Edward Hooke & sons, stone masons, which shows how the house got its name. It is between Lansdowne road and Six ways Erdington on the east side of gravelly hill North. I am not 100% certain as to which house it is on the 1913 map, but fiarly certain it musy be the one in red, which. apart from the num bers of houses, has a large area for storing stone, having apprently left next door with only a small garden , according to the map. Incidently Arthur Edward Hooke is at 167 high St erdington by 1920, according to the electoral rolls.

Many thanks Shera - could you please advise how we can access the electoral roll? All our research is via Ancestry.com and the info came from the census - didn't realise that you could check the electoral roll too!! Kind regards Jo

the birmingham electoral rolls are on the "midlands historical data" site where you pay for credits or take out a subscription. the electoral rolls only go up to 1950 but there are also kellys directories for searching.

Hello Mike - Wow what a detailed response!!! We have lovely family photographs of the Hooke family, but no one else is researching this name - with the exception of some long lost cousins over in California who responded to my request via Ancestry.com...what a thrill when they emailed us! Edward had 4 sons - Arthur Edward (who we understand moved to the US) George Henry (hubbie's grandfather - who was an engineer and had one of the first garages in Birmingham - opposite the Tyburn Pub now sadly a McDonalds!) then John Harold who served in WW1 and Edwin Victor (the proverbial black sheep of the family who went to the US too and married and died there) We really appreciate all the help from everyone who responded - you sound very experienced in family research, so hope you don't mind if we pick your brains again!! Kind regards Jo (Hooke)

Many thanks for your response - we will have to take a trip into town and see if we can access a Kelly's directory - Happy New Year, regards Jo
