Holy Trinity C of E School Wilson Road

tonbrad

proper brummie kid
Does anyone remember the above attend from 1953 to 1959. Have been living in South Wales for 36 years and made a nostalgic journey a couple of years ago only to discover that the school is now a Muslim centre. I remember Miss Wright (Headmistress) and Mr Lamont. There was a bomb shelter in the playground next to the toilet block. Also a small shop opposite the school yard entrance. We used to go to Holy Trinity Church Trinity Road every Wednesday morning and this was compulsory.

Holy Trinity School

I went to Holy Trinity C of E Junior School in Wilson Road. Miss Wright was known as Fanny Wright & Mr. Lamont succeeded her. We were always being herded off to Holy Trinity Church on the corner of Birchfield Road & Trinity Road. All we seemed to be taught at that school was singing & Religion. But rather than my going on about it here, Rod may recall that I have a web site which although it hasn't been updated for 5 years nevertheless tells of my experience at the school. The web address is:-

Yes, I know, it's a nightmarishly long address! Anyway, if you're interested & you can find your way to it see what you think.

Barrie, I have just read your well written story, I must be roughly your age group as I can relate to so much of it, I did enjoy your vivid descriptions and will return and read more tomorrow.

Barrie, that's a wonderful story you have told. I've only read a few instalments so far, but I'll be back. The detail gives it colour, but its your enthusiasm which makes it so readable.
Thank you for a good read, when I get down to it.
Peter

Barrie, thank you for the stories as Syilvia and Peter have said a great read. Thanks for postiong the link. Wendy

Thank you Barrie, I enjoyed reading about our school days. :)

I knew your sister Val, we were in the same class at Canterbury Road.

RE:Holy trinity

Hi
My father went to Holy Trinity school maybe around that time.He was born in 46 and went onto St Andrews. His name was Michael Fellows.Ring any bells?

Michael Fellows doesn't ring any bells, Mick, nor St. Andrews. Whereabouts did your father live? Do you recall any of his pals?
My sister Val married A guy called Arthur Boot from Wenlock Road, Witton. The ceremony was at Holy Trinity in 1955. They are very happy & live in sunny California, having emigrated in 1967.

Hi tonbrad,

I am thinking that you must be Tony Bradbury and that we were in the same class.

Holy Trinity School

I found a picture of Mr. Lamond, Mrs. Potter (school secretary) and Mrs. Harding, 2nd year teacher. I think the kids head, backround right, is Stephen Vines. Stephen also had a sister close in age, Sheila Vines. Some other pupil names that I remember are: Patricia Hughes, Maurice Pye, Arthur McArdell, Pearl White, Stanley Matthews.

There is a face from my past. The lady on the left is Mrs Potter, she was so nice. I was at school with her daughter Janet, I have tried to think where they lived, some where in or near Lozells I think.:)

Hi Di

Small world! I went to William Murdoch School with Jimmy Lamond, Mr. Lamond's son. Jimmy, had been to Canterbury Rd School . I knew quite a few people, through Cubs, Scouts and William Murdoch School, who had been to Canterbury Rd. I understand you were there too.

Hi Clive. Yes I did go to Canterbury Road. We held our centenery celebrations at school, last May. My first time there in over 50 years. Janet Potter was one of the girls I would very much like to have met up with again, but sadly she wasn't there.

Di and Clive: Only just caught up with this thread. The Mrs Harding in the photograph lived almost opposite me in Putney Road, I used to play with her son Peter when we were kids. Sadly, Mr. Harding committed suicide and I can remember they dragged him out onto the front lawn. I didn't sleep for a week after seeing that!

Hi Clive, yes that's me. Do you know what has happened to any of the others in our class?

Alas No! I did visit the UK in April and checked out the old neighborhood and took some pictures. I see you are now in South Wales. We also visited the Wye Valley and stayed at the Abbey Hotel opposite Tintern Abbey. Had I heard from you a bit earlier we could have maybe had a Holy Trinity School reunion :-). I moved to the US in the 70s and am presently living in Florida.

Hi, Clive and Tony, Do you remember me? I was in the same class as you both.

I remember you, Clive, in Hatfield Rd and Tony in Johnstone St.

Clive I went to one of your birthday parties and visited your house on many times and I remembered on one occasion you made me try from a big jar "Virol" you used to have it every day on a spoon but I didn't like it.

Tony I used to call for you in the morning for school, and at the door waiting for you I could smell the lovely aroma of toast cooking. We played many a happy hour on the bomb site a few doors away in Johnstone St and on the back wall we played "Rocketman".

If you both go on "Friends Reunited" site for Holy Trinity School on my profile you will see a few photo's of me now and then. I have been in touch with Jean Anthony and Jackie Wakeman (nee) Whiley - Eric's sister. TTFN, Mike.

Hi
I have just joined this site and am in the process of browsing various forums.
I was a pupil at Holy Trinity from 1943 to 1949 and remember the headmistess Miss Wright[A typical headmistress of the time]
Miss Wright taught the final year and I think it was Miss Harding who taught the year below[she was a lot younger than the photo shown on this forum].I rememer the bomb shelter and we used to run in at one end and out the other end ,this was totally forbidden-Im sure entrance and exit would have been blocked off shortly after I left [I dont think anyone had heard of the term Health and Safety at this time].

Pete

Hi I have just joined the forum, I went to Wilson rd. from age 6 to 10, started off at Westminster Rd, but got changed. I used to live at Hatfield Rd at the time.

That would be between 1952 -1956

Re: Holy Trinity School

Sorry Moma P, I had a dot where there shouldn't be one. Try this:-

Hi Christian. Fantastic story. I was born in Haughton Road, off Westminster Road and, although I went to Westminster Road school, our nearest shopping centre was Heathfield Road. I am most grateful for the list of shops; I have been trying to remember their names for years. I also went to Birchfield Road school and well remember the headmaster and fights in the playground. Your story is surely worth publishing in book form.
I now live in mid Wales but have fond memories of life in those distant days. One little snippet of additional information regarding the gramophone record shop. It was run by a Mr Vincent. He used to display a number of old coins in the window, a number of which I bought and still have.
Regards,
Handsworthborn.
