Holmes family of Ivy Lane, Aston

I am researching my grandmothers family who lived in Ivy Lane Aston from 1881 until at least 1901. My great grandmother Caroline Holmes is shown on the 1901 census as a widow living with her children Rose, Lily and Jesse and her father and brother both called Charles Evans. My grandmother Alice wasn't born until 1904. Even though Caroline is shown as a widow, I know that my grandfather Jesse Enos Holmes didn't die until 1/7/1926 and I can find no trace of him on the census. It has been suggested that he served in the Boer War but having failed to find him anywhere in any of the services, I think that this is just one of those family 'myths'!! Caroline died in December 1911 when my grandmother was only 7 and I know that she went to live with her eldest sister Rose but I don't know why. On Carolines death certificate it shows that the death was registered by her sister in law Selina Holmes so where was Jesse again? ( He seems very elusive doesn't he?) There was another sister born in 1906 called Violet and I think her married name was Pickering. Lily's married name was Welch. Jesse died in WW1 aged 18. Is anyone else researching this family or knows of them? Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks

Jenny
