Anyone know anything about a house called "The Retreat" in or near Potters Hill c1907-1930 with reference to the family name Holloway.

The Retreat

Thanks for your reply - much appreciated.

Just found some further details. Yes it was the street called The Retreat, not the house. The House was called Woodbine Cottage. Apparentely my Grandfather lived there (born 1904), Samuel Holloway his father was James Thomas Holloway.

I suppose James (Thomas) could have passed on and Samuel who would have been about 16 could have gone to sea (told he was a RN salior). My mother is very sure about The Retreat association, refering to the "Big House"? (and a rumor of a tunnel leading to Aston Hall!!)

I am new to this so may be going about it the wrong way. I have information that James Thomas was born 1873 (December?) and married Lottie in 1896(maiden name? born c1876 Walsall) . Children John? Tony? Samuel c1904, Ethel, May, Nancy & Violet. But I can't find any information about him (James Thomas) at all. He does not seem to be on the 1881 census, not found in 1920 census and no info about living at The Retreat??

Any info appreciated.

What an elusive family Keith.
James Holloway married Lottie May Wootton birmingham 1896 September qtr.
Birth of Lotty May Wootton registered Walsall 1975 Dec qtr.
Baptism of Lottie May Wootton in Mavesyn Ridware,Staffs November 25th 1875 parents john and Ann.
Cannot find Lottie/Lotty on 1881 census.

Alberta,

I have been looking around for weeks the information you must have found in minutes, Thank you.

As a novice at this (obviously talking to a seasoned geni), can you tell me how you got the information?

If anyone can shed any light on the Holloway/Retreat connection, I am still very intrigued.

Regards.

Holloway/Retreat

Have you looked for a Charlotte? as Lottie is a shortened form of Charlotte.

The Retreat ran from Sutton Street to Wilkinson Street, Aston, the houses
all had very long narrow gardens, with fences on the right hand side of the road going from Wilkinson Street, and a large wall with gates in on the other side. The Retreat was so named because when Aston Hall was under fire the soldiers retreated there. It would be about half a mile or so
from Aston Hall.
