Good evening. I am looking for details about Henry Herbert Friend who lived at 87 Hockley Hill, Handsworth, Birmingham.
I have seen from the maps posted in this thread that it was on a corner.
Are there any old photographs of number 87 Hockey Hill that any of you know of?

its possible there could be a photo somewhere its just finding it...what sort of info are you looking for about henry friend and what years are we talking about...maybe we could help...looking at mikes map no 87 looked a large property..maybe he ran a business from there ?

edit... you may already have this info but i have just found henry friend in the kellys directory dated 1921 at 25 to 35 soho hill..occupation gilt jewellery manufacturer..

Good morning again Lyn and thanks for looking up Henry Herbert Friend. According to the 1920 Electoral Register, Henry Herbert Friend had his workshop at 87 Hockley Hill and lived with his wife Jane at 73 Hockley Hill. As you correctly mention, the 1921 Kelly's Trade Directory cites Henry Herbert Friend at 25 to 35 Soho Hill.

I have looked at the BHF thread relating to Soho Hill but haven't found anything that would shed any light on this address at 25 to 35 Soho Hill. Could it have been a works complex where other small jewellery manufacturers worked? I have attached a newspaper advertisement from 1920 that also mentions Henry Herbert Friend and the 25 to 35 Soho Hill address. If anyone can shed any light on the manufacturing context for jewellers on Soho Hill, that would be very interesting information.

I have found a number of antique silver items bearing the "H.H.F." silversmith's mark. Henry Herbert Friend pioneered a process that allowed silver to be deposited on tableware, decanters and vases. I'm not sure if I should post this on the Soho Hill thread instead, in case there are others researching silver and gold jewellers in the area. Thank you all in advance for any help or snippets of information you can provide. I think this is a wonderfully prodcutive and responsive forum and I hope I can contribute more as my research advances.

You may already know this but on 1921 census the family are listed at 73 Soho Hill (home) but his place of work is 27 Soho Hill
By 1925 he is on the erolls as living at 87 Hockley Hill

hi martin could i ask exactly what info you are looking for is it henrys family going way back or is it mainly the business side of it...reason for asking is if you still need help it could be better if we start a new thread under surname interests and transfer all the posts about him from this thread to the new one...saves going sort of off topic

For info. By 3 March 1923, a district office of Britannic Assurance was at 87 Hockley Hill with A Jephcote as District Manager (Source: Birmingham Gazette)
