Hitchens Book Shop

Don't know if you can help me with this one. When I was a little-un, during the war, we had used to visit a lady we called Auntie Elsie, her surname was Hitchens and she had a daughter named Mavis. They had a second-hand book shop, she used to hire books out. I know the street was off Ladywood Rd, I think it was Grosvenor St West, the shop was on the corner of either Ryland St, or Ruston St. Sorry I can't be more precise. Mavis Hitchens had used to sell costume jewellery in Birmingham Market.

barrie,in the 1949 Kelly's Mrs Elsie Hitchins (note i not e) a shopkeeper was at 92,Grosvenor Street West, Birmingham 16
and was on the corner with Ryland Street.

Barrie, until you mentioned it I had forgotten about Hitchens. I lived in Grosvenor Street West between 1949 - 1963. Hitchens wasn't actually on the corner because that was the bookies. It was a few doors away in Ryland Street.
I bought earrings & brooches from there for my moms birthday/christmas presents. Thanks for the memory !!

Mallosa

Mallosa is right on that one.I used to use Mrs.Hitchens shop quita lot when I lived in Morville Street.I remember that you could either buy the comics or books, mostly used ones,or take two back and get one in return.I must have had thousands of comics from there which I now know I should have kept.Loads of mostly Marvel comics or the weird ones like Strange Adventures or something like that,Commando comics and lots more.BobS.:D

Hi Barrie, my name is Colin (originally from Aston). I don't know if you still post on here but came across this post after talking to the Wife. Her name is Sally and she is the Daughter of Mavis (now Elmer) Hitchins. Just to let you know that Mavis is still with us and fighting fit at the grand age of 83. The three of us moved away to near Atherstone in 2007. If there's anything you would like to know we will try to help. Regards, Colin Scattergood
