In case people haven't heard of it there is a new website at https://www.historypin.com/ , which basically is a google-type map on which members can put historic photos on at the appropriate place, and also mark the date. It is them possible to search for photos that have been put on by where and by date range. not too many of birmingham , and none pre 1900m but a good idea for thos ethat are interested.
