Hinge Building / Midland Red Workshop Heath Mill Lane

Hi

Does anyone have any info on the hinge building which is now a nightclub on Heath Mill Lane? I'm assuming they used to make hinges there originally, and I also believe it was used as a Midland Red workshop. I think it is called the hinge building as the corner of the building which is on Lower Trinity Street where it meets Heath Mill Lane is shaped like a hinge pin.

Thanks

That particular building on the corner was the Reception and offices of an engineering firm named Embley Brothers. I used to go into the Reception if I wanted to see my brother who worked for the brothers and the girl would tell me which unit he was working in. Embley's had numerous factory units along the length of Heathmill Lane making metal castings and industrial/ornamental brass pressings etc. I have a number of their brasses (purchased I might add from the small factory shop) ranging from a horse and haywain which we bought as part of mom's 60th birthday present, to a ten/twelve inch crocodile which is a pair of nutcrackers, plus many others. I think Embley's ceased trading round about 1990. I have never heard it referred to as the 'hinge building'.

Does any know where I can get the brasses cleaned, polished and laquered?

Junie.

Good laquer after cleaning (my Wife cleans ours) is the spray that you can buy from Halfords etc. This is the clear over base laquer that is used on most cars paintwork.

Thank you Nick, but I do not want to clean them myself, I would rather pay someone else to do it for me.

I'm not aware of Midland Red using that building either, they did used to park buses on the site of the gasworks in Adderley Street, a patch of ground which passed to West Midlands PTE (now National Express West Midlands) opposite the former BCT Liverpool Street Garage.

Junie - One risk I feel is that were you to get them commercially cleaned you could lose a lot of detail if they were polished on a polishing mop. Also they would look over bright to may peoples taste as they would revert to the as new look. That however may be what you are after.

You could try asking this company.

Thanks Junie. Not sure about the buses thing, thats just what I was told.

BernieD'Boult - Thank you for information on Premier Metal Finishers. I will get in touch with them when I gather my brasses together.

will562 - To my knowledge no buses were ever parked on the Embley Bros. factory units.

Junie.
