Hill Family

Hi. I am tracing my family tree. I am stuck on the trail of John Hill (my great great grandfather) who was married to Ellen Ridding. They lived in Unett Street, Birmingham when first married in 1860. He was a Brass worker. They moved to Wheeler Street and his occupation was jeweller. I can't find his birth details although I know he was from Birmingham. Can anyone assist? My maiden name is Hill. My dad is John Hill b 1936.

hi amanda i am just looking at john and ellens marriage cert and ellen is down as living in unett st but john is living in nearby barr st..you probably have their marr cert??? so will know that john was 27 when he married so born in 1833 so before records began in 1837 this is why you cant find his birth so you need to see if you can find a baptism for him although looking at his marr cert we do know that his father (your gt gt gt grandfather) was also a john hill...

note that john was a jeweller when he married...it was his dad also john who was a brassfounder...they married at st georges church which is where our mom and dad married many years later in 1950...hope this helps

Possible baptism at St Phillips. April 1835 but birth given as Feb 1833. Father John and Mother Phoebe. Father brass founder. Address Harford Street.

Family Search gives date of birth 24 Feb 1833 and baptism 20 April 1835. There are several John Hills listed so hope this is the correct one.

thanks jan and jukebox...i think the baptism you both found could be that of john b 1833 given that harford for is next to unett st and barr st and the occuption of john as brassfounder so john b1833 could have followed in his dads footsteps..here is the marr cert for john b 1833 and ellen ridding

Hi I have their marriage certificate. Thanks for the info. I didn't realise that records didn't begin until 1837. That explains it. I will search for a baptism. Many thanks
