Highgate Road or Highgate Street

Family history census and other records from 1837 to 1851 show Highgate Road, Aston (Deritend/Bordesley).
Could anyone point me in the direction of a map that shows this address?
Did Highgate Road become Highgate Street, or Upper Highgate Street in Highgate in later times perhaps?

Upper Highgate Street ran from Leopold Street to Highgate Street which terminated at Gooch Street. Highgate Road ran from Moseley Road to Stratford Road, as far as I am aware all these roads are still extant, though I don't have a clue when they came into being, but I'm sure Mike will be able to sort that out for you.

At this time Highgate was a part of the parish of Aston, and not Birmingham. The 1845 Post Office Directory describes it as a hamlet on the crest of a hill from the top of Deritend towards Moselev . As a small Hamlet (probably at the time only one street, addresses were just a number followed by Highgate. The 1845, 1849, and 1855 Post Office directories and the 1858 Dix directory all list no 69 Highgate as Chas. Mayfield, boot & shoe maker.
It looks like "Highgate" is in fact the Moseley Road, which would fit with the description above. The Orange Tree pub is 83 Highgate up to 1858, but in the 1867 Post Office directiory it is 155 Mosely Road. I will try and work out exactly where 69 Highgate was.
This identification of Highgate with the Moseley Road is news to me

Initially after renaming Highgate, Moseley road the numbering remained the same, though it was altered from sequential (1,2,3,4..) to odd numbers one side, even the other in the early 1890s. However, before that , around 1860, Highgate Park was set out, and no 69 Highgate would have been approximately in the area in red on the c1892 map below.

hi mike i am a little bit confused as i thought brummielink said his family lived at 69 highgate road or was it just called highgate and back then there was no highgate road ..thanks mike

No highgate road is listed in directories or map I have access to, before 1867, only "Highgate". I assumed that the two were synonymous . Possinly Brunielink will tell us if the person listed is the one he is interested in

The Orange Tree was on the corner of Highgate Square and was in fact I believe replaced by Highgate Fire Station before it was moved to new premises further down the road toward Belgrave Road.

This section of the 1866 map published by Archibald Fullarton & Co and engraved by J Bartholemew shows Highgate Street in more or less the same position as today, and Highgate Road as Highgate Lane but also in the same location, but the section from Ladypool Road to Stoney Lane is the called Thomas Street.

No help in determining if we have what Brummielink wants to know, but have found map confirmation that part of Mosely road was once named "Highgate" on a rather poor reproduction in the book Balsall Heath of a1838 estate map

I read in Carl Chinn's Streets of Brum part 3, "There is no indication as to when the Alcester Road in Balsall Heath, and Moseley was named the Moseley Road, but it is given as such on the Earl of Dartmouth's map of 1823".

He also states that in 1818 this was stated in Pye's Directory of Modern Birmingham. "You leave Birmingham through either Alcester Street or up Camphill where there is a half timbered house inhabited by Mr John Simcox an attorney,in a field nearly opposite there is perhaps the best view over the town of Birmingham that can be taken. A short distance beyond on the right is a row of houses to which is given the name of Highgate".

I think Pye is talking about Stratford House and the view from what is now Highgate Park, so perhaps it was only the row of houses that went by the name of Highgate at that time?

The following are the records I have covering the address in question:
Highgate is quoted on a baptism record dated 1837.
Highgate Road (Hamlet of Bordesley, Parish of Aston) is quoted in the 1841 Census Records (record attached)
69 Highgate (Hamlet of Bordesley, Parish of Aston, Deritend & Bordesley Ward) is quoted in 1851 Census Records.
69 Highgate is quoted in the 1858 Trade Directory
69 Moseley Road is quoted in the 1862 Business Directory
I could find no Highgate Road on the old maps available to me on the internet, only Highgate Street and Higher Highgate Street.

Hi Guys

I'm putting together a family history and it seems that both sides of my mothers family lived in Highgate Street, one a 1/70 or Back 70 and the other at 62 Highgate Street. They were married at St Patricks, Frank Street. I've sourced photo's of St Patricks but am looking for photo's of Highgate street before it was redeveloped. ie before the war

Thanks for the map. My great grandmother & grandmother lived at 1/70 and grandfather lived at 62, my grandparents married before WW2 and lived at 1/70. During WW2 something blocked the chimney and great grandmother kept hitting the blockage with a stick.

It was a aerial land mine!

Didn't go off as they later moved to Billesley where I was born

Highgate Road, Highgate St and Upper Highgate St all still exist (with some changes) as they did in the 1890s. The latter two are now one continuous road.

The street directory in the 1835 Wrightson and Webb Directory also has an entry for 'Highgate, Moseley Road.' No 'Mayfield' listed.
