Does anyone have access to the 1891 census for the Handsworth area?
I am looking for George Hewitt aged 40 & his wife Sophia aged 34
Therir children are
George12
Fred 8
Florrie 7
Willie 4
Louie 2
Alfred 1

In 1901 they appear with the head as William Nocholls & the whole family from Sophia down appears as Nicholls
We don't think that Sophia remarried, I am tring to find out when the surname changed
Thanks

Nicholls/Hewitt

Thanks John,
I had already accessed 1891 online. I have also obtained Louisa's death certificate dated 27/2/1902 The age is correct and the fact that she was the widow of William Hewitt, the informant was her son Henry, I'll have to do some digging on that.
She was living at 9 Court 3 (it looks like) Darwin Street
The sub-district on the certificate is Deritend of reg district Aston
I guess they never moved far.
As a point of interest I have the birth certificate of George Frederic Hewitt (AKA William Nicholls?) who was born in the "borough gaol" in 1850 & William Nicholls gives his birtplace as Winston Green in 1891(I presume that that was the Borough Gaol?. I am beginning to think that the family stories are true & that George Hewitt changed his name to William Nicholls, the family reverted to Hewitt in the 1940's. All bmd certificates are in the name of Hewitt
I have been trying to get my Hewitt cousins, most of whom still live in B'ham to help me sort this out.
Thanks again
Dolores

Re: Nicholls/Hewitt

Hi. I am researching the Thomas Nicholls family listed as living on Hospital St on the 1891 census.
Many thanks for any leads.
