Annie E Herring married the above in the 3rd quarter of 1878 in Birmingham. Does anyone know her dob or whether she was single at the time of marriage? i think she died in 1904. Many thanks.
Re: Was Annie a spinster or a widow when she married James William Allport?
Thank you Maurice i have looked on the 1861 census and notive their is an Ann aged 6 who is a stepdaughter to the Head of the House surname Ellis. The mother is Sarah Ellis and they married in 1855. I suppose it is possible Sarah had Ann (annie) out of wedlock or maybe Sarah was previously married and was widowed. the plot thickens! Judith

Judith,
I was just looking at a few of the later censuses and she seems to give birth years between 1852 and 1856. There's also a Mary Anne HERRING born in Warwick, 3 Qtr 1854 Vol 6d Page 395. I think you need to get that Marriage Certificate!

The marriage cert will say whether she was a spinster or not. There is an Ann Herring on the 1871 census married to a Wiliam Herring b. about 1812; and there is a William Herring of that age who died in 1877. They were living at 4 Highbury Place, Latimer(?) St, B'ham. That Ann Herring was born in 1802 in Henley in Arden.
