Henry May. Brass Foundry late 19th early 20th century -

In 1891 Henry May born Birmingham 1854 living in Ladywood is a brass worker(employed). In 1901 he is in Harborne and is a Brass Founder, working on his own account. In the next census, still in Harborne, different address, he describes himself as a Brass Founder (Motor Fittings) working on his own account.

He is not the Henry May of 123 Sandpits who was a general dealer. He was not the May of May and Padmore in Leopold Street, that was a Walter May. We have a very good handle on his ancestry and descendants, BMD and so on and don't want for family info. What we don't have is:

Where did he do his Brass Foundrering? (Sorry about the made up word). He does not appear in any Kelly's of the relevant period or other trade directories we have tried. Can anyone help please?

According to Ancestry's B'ham rate books in 1911 he had a workshop at Ryland Street, Ladywood.

The Rate book shows him at court 4 Ryland St (in turquoise). There are 2 houses in court 4 immediately behind the houses fronting the street. These are listed as occupied by someone else. Therefore Henry must have occupied one or both of the smaller buildings in the court (marked in red).

Thank you both very much indeed for your detailed replies, more than I had dared to hope for. His descendant for whom I asked the question will be delighted, she has been searching for this for years. Thanks again.
