Henry Humphries 1901

Paul D

master brummie
Hi, as my mum and I are going through the family tree on her side, there are some things we would like to know more about. There is a family member called Henry Humphries, I say family member but really he is not blood related, I,ll try and explain. My great, great grandfather Thomas Williams born 1849 was married to Emma (nee atkins) born 1847. Thomas unfortunately had a spell in prison at the age of 18 but then went to sea at 22 years old. Emma Williams then had an affair with Henry Humphries and had a child called Alice with him. When Thomas came back Emma and Thomas got back together again. Unfortunately Thomas went back to prison again at the age of 52 and Emma went back to Henry Humphies to live.I would like to know what Henry Humphries did for a living as some family members have said he was a music hall band leader or even a conductor. Can anyone help please? Paul

Paul there are a couple of Henry Humphries on Ancestry, ss do you have his date of birth and where he was born which would help. Carol.

Hi Carol, that's the problem I do not know Henry Humphries date of birth or where he was born. I made a mistake on my first post. When Emma went back to Henry Humphries it was a lodger not a partner. The 1901 census I am told has Henry and his wife Alice, children Dorothy, Harold and Wilfred plus Emma Williams my great, great grandmother. Its complicated this family history stuff.

Is this the Henry Humphries?
1901 at 70, Prince Albert Street, Aston
Henry Humphries, aged 31 born 1870 Malvern, Mineral Water Carter
Alice Humphries,Wife aged 30 born 1871 Penkridge,
Dorothy Humphries,Daughter aged 6 born 1895 Birmingham
Harold Humphries,Son aged 1 born 1900 Birmingham
Wilfred Humphries,Son aged 1 Mth born 1901 Birmingham
Emma HUMPHRIES, Mother-In-Law Married aged 54 born 1847
Heywood, Staffordshire
The original definately gives Emma's age as 54

By 1911 he has called himself Frederick and is living at 86 Victoria St Small Heath, with wife Alice and children. His occupation is Carter for Corporation.

Alice Humphries in 1901 was Alice Elizabeth Williams who married Henry Frederick Humphries in 1894,the daughter of Thomas and Emma so it says on the 1871 census
Market Street , Penkridge
Thomas Williams age 22 b Penkridge
Emma Williams age 24 b.Haywood
John H Williams age 2 b. Penkridge
Alice E Williams age 6 months.b. Penkridge her birth was registered Dec 1870,

1881 census no williams family but this entry ( the family using Emmas maiden name))
South Street Atherstone Warks.
Thomas Atkins age 32 b. Penkridge
Emma age 33 b, Gt Haywood
Henry J age 12 b. Penkridge
Alice E age 10 b. Penkridge
Emily J age 5 b. birmingham
Ethel M age 5 months b. Birmingham

1891 Camden Street
Thomas Williams age 42 Penkridge
Emma age 43 Gt Haywood
Henry J age 22 Penkridge
Alice E age 20 Penkridge
Ethel J age 15 b. Saltley

I find it hard to believe that Alice birth father was a Henry Humphries and that she married a Henry Humphries.
Is this story something that may have been mistakenly passed down or have you written proof.
In the 1901 census the original does not have Emma written as Humphries, the enumerator has put Henry Humphries as head and a ditto mark in place of all the other
surnames, it happens quite often that the enumerator assumes that everyone in the house has the same surname.

Morning Alberta, this is confusing but I think we have got to the bottom of it. I spoke to my mum on the phone just now and with the information you and others have given to me we have worked it out.Emma Williams was never married to Henry Humphries or romantically linked, the Humphries family took them in when Thomas Williams went to sea. Henry`s wife was called Alice and coincidently Emma Williams had a daughter called Alice but she was a Williams. I noted that Thomas was using his wife`s maiden name in the 1881 census. He was a bit of a rogue and had changes his name a few times. This has cleared up some of the mistakes in our family tree. Thank you all, wonderful site.

Paul can your Mother find any link to the mystery Henry Humphries and his wife Alice who took in Emma williams and her family and the
Henry Humphries who married Emmas daughter Alice Elizabeth Williams in 1894 and in whose house Emma is living in 1901.

Hello Alberta, my mum and i have to assume that Alice was married to Henry Humphries and Emma Williams was Alice`s mother. Henry being Emma`s son in law. Henry and Alice took in the mother inlaw Emma whilst husband Thomas was in prison. We do not know how long he was inside for and what became of Emma Williams. Post #5 says that the 1911 census shows that Emma is no longer living with the Humphries. Would love to know if she went back to Thomas when he came out.

There are a couple of deaths Emma Williams registered in Aston 1905 March and Dec 1905 in each case the lady is 57 years old.

Paul, another entry that may interest you.
On all the census Thomas is either a Joiner or a Painter and Decorator.
In 1911 living with the wilson family at 62 Upper Potter Street, Everton,Lancs
Thomas Williams age 60 born Not known Staffordshire, widower, boarder, occ. Jobber Property( the index is incorrect it says Proprietor but original says Property)
The info is obviously written in the hand of the head of the house so the age being slightly incorrect and knowing he came from Staffs but not where
is quite understandable. Worth a thought? Alberta

That is interesting, mum said he was a paper hanger or painter, looks like he ended up on his own. Thank you for posting this.
