Henry Child, Pawnbroker

RRJ

Brummie Boomer
I've tried unsuccessfully to find him using the search facility (Pawnbrokers) so throwing this one out to the learned members.

My G Grandmother Annie Child (b: abt 1880 ) Her parents Henry & Rosa Child (nee Farmer) All I have is they were both pawnbrokers
and resided in Court Lane. I don't know if they were owners or employees or if the business was located in Court Lane.

Of course I'm hoping for a family photo of them stood on the pavement in front of the shop with the brass balls above them :grinning: but
seriously any clue/titbits would be very much appreciated. (big thumb)

1891 census Rosa is listed as a Pawnbroker (notem), address is listed as Pawnbroker's Shop, High St Erdington.

Possible mention of Rosa in the Warwickshire Herald 3 Mar 1887.

Excellent Mike, Also ties in nicely with Annie marrying my G Grandfather in 1904, he lived at 22 Station Rd Erdington.
Plus I see more than one shop at one point.

Blimey Mike! No I haven't yet. I've been going through my male line (Johnson) and just quickly jotted down Annie's
details/parents etc with every intention of coming back to the Child line. An Ancestry link I found on Google tells me that
the Child family are fourth cousins of Benjamin Franklin! :joy:

There is a death registered in 1890 December quarter.
Aston District, Henry Child aged 59 - ages and DoB are often approximate. (He gave his age as 48 on 1881 census)

Many thanks everyone. You've certainly expanded my knowledge of their shop locations and movements. (big thumb)

Following from Mike's info...

Thomas Child and Mary Ann (nee Baker) did have a son Henry and he is listed on Lancaster St as a pawnbroker on the 1861 census with his widowed mother (the same), brother and daughter from his first marriage.

The age doesn't exactly match the later censuses and there are other Henry Childs born around the same time, so would need more details (from marriage maybe) to be sure.

The Mary Ann Child of Albert St is possibly the widow of above Henry's brother Charles.

Many thanks for the pointers @MWS I don't have an open ended FMP subscription, just grab a months worth when
time/finances allow to research a family line.
I hear Kelly's mentioned a lot on here. Of course I've googled it to see if it's free or subscription online to search
but am drawing a blank. Is there a direct link?.

Kellys published a series of directories from about the 1880s. They took over from what were previously called Post Office Directories. Other directories are also sometimes available. A few are available online and freely downloadable at https://specialcollections.le.ac.uk/digital/collection/p16445coll4. Many others are avilable either to buy or consult for a fee online sites, the major one for the midlands being https://www.midlandshistoricaldata.org/. Some are not available at except in libraries.

There are some editions on Ancestry - again you can dip in and put for 1 months subscription. No idea about FMP as seldom use it.

Familysearch is free (you have to register) and whilst not as extensive as Ancestry or findmypast, it's pretty good...

Thanks @MWS I'll have a gander.

I see that there is a Mary Ann Childs (likely to be Child) of the right age listed as a boarder with Leon & Annie in 1921, so a possible further connection to the Mary Ann mentioned previously.
